2008 Jr. Rookie Champs!!

Hammonds Plains Junior Rookie playoffs included 6 teams and were held at Highland Park on August 22 and 23rd. The Blue Jays went 2-0 in their round robin games to advance to the finals from their division. The Blue Devils squeeked out a 1-run win against the other girls team, the Blue Bombers, to advance from their division. The championship game was another close 1-run win for the Blue Devils against a strong Blue Jays team. The teams were evenly matched and the final game included some key hits and great defensive plays by both teams.

Congrats to the Blue Devils - 2008 Jr. Rookie Champions!!

Congratulations to the HP Red Sox, who recently captured "Silver" in the Carl Morash Mosquito "House" tournament, hosted by the Woodside Minor Baseball Association. The Red Sox posted a 3-1 record during the round robin portion of the tournament before bowing out 11-10 in the finals to a strong Humber Park team.

Overall a strong effort by our Red Sox.

2008 Sr. Rookie Champs!!

Congratulations to Senior Rookie Team 6 (Red Sox) for their 15-11 victory over Team 2 (Hornets) in the Championship game.

It was an awesome game with great hitting and great fielding from both teams.  Despite the rather wet weather, there was a full house at the field to watch this most enjoyable game that could have easily gone either way.

Michael and Jeff announced the game aboard Greg's truck out in right field.

JLM Memorial Trophy - Joe MacLean played men's orthodox baseball in the Hammonds Plains League on the Thunder and lost his battle to cancer in 2001; his son, Camden, plays Senior Rookie.  In honor of his memory, the Senior Rookie trophy is now known as the JLM Memorial Senior Rookie trophy with a picture of Joe placed on the plaque.  The JLM Memorial Senior Rookie trophy was presented by a member of the men's Thunder team and the MacLean family presented individual medals to the 1st and 2nd place teams in a very moving ceremony.

Again, congratulations to Neil Wortman's Red Sox for their championship game victory!!

WD Piercey 1
2008 HP Red Sox at WD Piercey Mosquito Tournament

Congratulations to the HP Red Sox, who recently captured "Silver" in the W.D. Piercey Mosquito "House" tournament, hosted by the Halifax West Minor Baseball Association. The Red Sox posted a 3-0 record during the qualifying portion of the tournament and went on to victory in the semi-finals against the HW Angels. Ahead 10-8 entering the 6th of the Championship game, the Red Sox finally bowed out 13-10, as a strong Humber Park team recorded 5 runs in the top of the 6th.

Overall a strong effort by our Red Sox, who look to rebound in the upcoming Mosquito House Provincial Tournament hosted by our Association at Highland Park during the Labour Day Weekend.

The Red Sox would once again like to thank Halifax West for hosting a fun and exciting tournament.

HPBA Player Headed to PeeWee Nationals!

Congratulations to Christopher Smith of the Hammonds Plains A’s PeeWee AAA team who has been selected to play at the Canadian PeeWee Championship in Vaughn, Ontario (August 21 – 24).  Christopher is one of three players picked up by the Dartmouth Mariners who won the National Elimination Tournament last weekend in Bedford. The Mariners defeated Hammonds Plains in the semi-finals by a 3-1 score.

Christopher left a favorable impression on the Mariners during that game:  he started the game on the mound, going 5 innings and surrendering a single run.

Good luck to Chris at the Nationals!

HPBA Recognized as Leader in Promoting Girl's Baseball!

The following is a re-print of an article that appeared recently on the Baseball Nova Scotia Website (http://www.baseballnovascotia.com/).

Girl's Baseball Growing in Hammonds Plains

When people think of women's baseball, most people think of players like Lauren Bay and Danielle Lawrie who are members of the Canadian Womens Softball Team. But women's baseball in Canada is continually growing and there is no better example of that than what is happening in Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia.

This small community outside of Halifax has grown the girls game at an outstanding rate. In the last year alone, the Hammonds Plains Baseball Association has gone from 36 girls registered to 81. The association was able to put together a girls t-ball team, two rookie level teams and two mosquito level teams.

Holly Lapierre, the association's President, has put it to herself and has worked tirelessly to improve the women's game in her community. Last year I had six girls in mosquito, this year I have 33 and a lot of it is because they would go back to school and tell their friends, says Lapierre.

When Lapierre took over as the President of the Hammonds Plains association four years ago, there were 186 kids registered. This season that number has grown to 416. A major reason why she has been able to grow her registration numbers in such a fashion is her focus on getting more girls involved in baseball.

Last year, of the 36 girls we had registered, 22 were at the rookie level. So we decided to make an experimental all-girls team that played with the boys, says Lapierre. The girls had such an amazing time and some of the parents came up to me and asked if I would do this again next year and I said "why wouldn't I"?

We wanted to make sure, however, that we gave them a choice, adds Lapierre. We didn't want to tell these girls that they had to play here or they had to play there and a lot of parents contacted me and said thanks for letting my daughter decide.

Girls make up for nearly 20 percent of registered players in Hammonds Plains while the national average is at approximately 10 percent. Lapierre credits the fact that she gave parents an alternative option. "You need to have a girls program to keep them involved", says Lapierre. "If associations don't say yes we're going to have a girls program, then you lose people right at registration."

Lapierres emphasis on girl's baseball in her region can be summed up in the upcoming All-Girls Day in Baseball where they plan on having exhibition games involving all the girls in the Hammonds Plains association as well as clinics, possibly featuring members of the Canadian Women's National Team. The girls program has also been embraced by the parents just by way of their involvement. Usually I give the coaches a gray t-shirt that says "coach" on the back, but I had a girls t-ball team that had hot pink shirts and the coaches insisted that they have the same colour as the girls. So now I have two grown men in hot pink t-shirts along with the girls. But the parents involvement is more than just matching the girls wardrobe, mosquito AAA and pee-wee AAA coaches have offered their services to help with practices and Lapierre has hired two summer students as a resource for parents to work with the girls. The associations president sees the fruits of her labour on a daily basis. Last year we handed out pink A's hats for the girls and I see them with it all the time. I'll be at the grocery store and I'll see them with their hat on. Then what will happen is other girls will see that and want to know how to get one and they'll come and register. I had four girls register late because their friends were telling them what they were doing this summer (playing baseball).

At the end of the day, it's all about growing the girl's game and the Hammonds Plains Baseball Association is setting a fine example for the rest of the country.

Bantam A's Win Silver at Craig Clarke Memorial Tournament

Congratulations to Coach Greg and the Hammonds Plains Bantam A's for winning Silver at the 7th Annual Craig Clarke Memorial Bantam AA Tournament, held in Truro from 27 - 29 June.

The team posted a 2 - 1 record in the round-robin, and were defeated 12 - 4 by the host team in the Gold-Medal game. Very well done to our boys for their first tournament of the season.

On a sad note, Jacob Hubley, an A's Team Leader and one of the top Bantam Players in our district, suffered a season-ending knee injury early in game 1 of the tournament. The Bantam A's and all of HPBA wish Jacob a swift recovery and a full return to baseball next season.
