Wednesday, August 15 Event a success on and off field HAVERSTRAW WINS TITLE; PROCEEDS TOTAL A RECORD $12,000. - Eileen O'Hara Rockland County Little League teams are well-known for their annual charity tournaments. District 18 Girls Major League Softball had its most successful Tournament of Champions this summer. It was a year of firsts for the tournament hosted by Pearl River at Anderson Field July 21-29. Proceeds, which benefitted Camp Venture in New City, totaled $12,000, the highest amount ever raised by the Softball Tournament of Champions. This included a $10,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation that will fund a new technology project at Camp Venture. The opening day of the tournament featured the inaugural all-star game between teams from Camp Venture. Orangetown Councilmen Denis Troy and Dr. Edward Fisher served as umpires for a two inning game. "It was a terrific day for everyone involved," tournament director Gene McMahon said. "The kids felt part of a real team, with hats ant T-shirts, and they really played a great game. It was a lot of fun for the players as well as the spectators." Another first for the tournament was the home-run derby. Each team nominated three girls to compete in the three-round contest. Julie Pacino of the South Orangetown Dodgers broke a three-way tie after the third round to claim the victory. After a 15-0 regular season the Haverstraw Blue Jays continued their unbeaten streak with wins over Stony Point, South Orangetown, and Pearl River with strong pitching from sisters Brianna and Catherine Peterson, and Melissa Jacob. Haverstraw advanced to the tournament final in the winners' bracket. The South Orangetown Dodgers handed the Blue Jays their first loss in the first game of the double-elimination final, 15-5. The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Haverstraw had to bounce back quickly after the loss, since there were only 15 minutes between games. "I was worried about how the girls would react because they'd never lost," Haverstraw manager Lee Ann Rose said. The Blue Jays' offense responded. Timely hitting by Allison Kopf, Bianca Griffin, and Amanda Babcock led Haverstraw to an 11-2 win over South Orangetown for the Championship. "Everyone did the job" Rose said. "The hitters came out swinging, and the pitching and defense were great."
