Hamilton Hurricanes back in
Babe Ruth World Series

FROM THE TRENTONIAN

HAMILTON — The Hamilton Hurricanes are World Series-bound again.

The best 12-year-old girls softball team in Mercer County completed a sweep of the Middle Atlantic Regional it hosted the past three days by holding off Luzerne County, Pa., yesterday morning to stamp its ticket to another Babe Ruth Softball World Series.

Building a first inning lead on doubles by Jaime Terry and Jesica Giordano, then relying on an error-free defense and great pitching by Giordano the rest of the way, Hamilton beat the team from the Scranton area, 2-1, in front of a big crowd at the Hamilton Girls Softball Association complex.

Giordano’s third complete-game win of the regional earned the defending Babe Ruth Softball world champs a spot in this year’s U-12 World Series that begins Aug. 6 in Wilson, N.C.

The Hurricanes are the first area team to reach back-to-back world championships in any sport.

“A lot of people were counting on us to do it again, and I didn’t
want to let anyone down,” said Giordano, an eighth grader at Crockett Middle School in Hamilton who also pitched the 3-2 win the Hurricanes scored over Luzerne Saturday night.

“I can’t say I was in control all the way, but I knew I had to do my best and beat them because I don’t like them (Luzerne) because they’re our big rival,” added Giordano. “I felt a lot of pressure, but knew we could beat them again if I pitched my best.

“It helped we were in the lead from the beginning. I felt a little relieved we scored so early and had the fans behind us.”

Luzerne needed to beat Hamilton twice yesterday to deny the HGSA girls their return trip to the World Series.

Manager Frank Bennett’s team made sure it didn’t happen as it jumped in front early then relied on its strength — excellent defense and great pitching — to win its ninth tournament of the summer.

“I’ve coached these girls since there were seven, and each year they won at least one major title,” said Bennett. “We played in 13 tournaments this summer and we’ve won nine. Now we’re going for the big one.”

Hamilton’s road to the World Series featured wins over Southern N.J. champ Washington Township (2-1), Northern N.J. winner Montville (3-0), Luzerne, and Upstate New York entry Southern Tier (7-0) to reach yesterday’s final round.

“I’m ecstatic right now,” said Terry, who played right field yesterday after pitching the Hurricanes into the championship game Sunday when she pitched a no-hitter against Southern Tier, missing out on a perfect game because of one walk.

“When I saw Karen (Prihoda) catch the ball for the final out it was such an unbelievable feeling to know we were going back to the World Series,” said Terry. “It was the same way she made the final out when we won the world series.”

Terry, Giordano, Maeve McCann and Alyssa James are the only Hurricane players back from last year’s world champions.

“After I got the double on my first swing and Jess doubled me in the team was so pumped,” said Terry. “This feels so great.”

Because of their committment to Babe Ruth softball the Hamilton girls had to pass up trips to USSA and ASA tournaments in Kansas City and Orlando, Fla. because it conflicted with Babe Ruth tournaments.

“Every weekend during the season we play the best competition we can find, and it’s why these girls have become such an outstanding team,” said Bennett. “I didn’t feel it would be easy to win this because we were playing at home. You never know what you’re going up against.

“We have such a great pitching staff with Jessie, Jamie and Haley Peterson,” added Bennett. “Our bats are going to carry us, so we’ll see what happens when we get to the World Series.”

Getting there was the tough part for the Hurricanes. Now to repeat as world champs will take their best softball ever.

"The winners in life think constantly in terms of I can, I will, and I am. Losers, on the other hand, concentrate their waking thoughts on what they should have or would have done, or what they can't do." - Dennis Waitley
