VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
We are very proud to announce that one of our own has been selected as The PoP Warner Volunteer of the year.
Chuck has been an intricate part of youth football in the greater Danbury area since 1971. He was also very essential in helping form many of the programs used today. He was the first one in our area to come up with the 89'er teams. allowing a safer, more teaching enviroment for the young kids. Last year he began in Danbury a tiny mites team, allowing youngster as young as 5 to pick up the very basics of the game while having a great time while not being intimidated.
Chuck is one of the people who helped create the Danbury Vikings. He is not only a coach, a member of the Board of Directors but also serves on the Board of Western Connecticut Pop Warner.
Chuck was born to be a coach. He makes kids feel at ease and win or lose he treats them all like they were special. His love of coaching has had him involved in softball, PAL, basketball and even the Special olympics. He helped his Special Olympic team make it to the world games in the 1980's, bringing them a few victories along the way.
Aside from coaching Chuck also found time to play himself in the Danbury Industrial Softball League and the Danbury Over 40 softball League. He played till a knee injury made it impossible to continue. Chuck is also involved in a program in the Danbury area that houses abused children.
Chuck is also a life time member of the Vetrens of Foriegn War. He was eligible for membership after having served in the US Marines and having done a few tours of duties in Viet Nam during that war.
Chuck is a family man, He has been married to his wife Leslie for more then a quarter of a century. He has 3 sons and 4 beautiful grandchildren. Chuck is a friend to many and is always available when it comes to the kids in the area, whether it be coaching, or mentoring or just a shoulder to lean on.
Congratulations Coach Gartland !!!
