SHOOTING PROCEDURE
• Shooters move to assigned shooting points with all required equipment to include eye and hearing protection.
• Squad Leader (position 1) ask “Squad Ready”. This gives anyone not ready a chance to get ready or fix any issues to be ready. If your not ready tell them.
• Squad Leader ask “Puller Ready”. After squad indicates ready. This gives everyone a chance to start concentrating on what they need to do.
• Puller indicates "READY".
• Squad Leader (position 1) ask “Lets See One”.
• Puller calls “In 1, 2, 3”. Then activates the trap to throw a single clay bird (Target). This gives everyone that should be now concentrating on seeing what a target will look like a further chance to focus their concentration.
• Shooter: Load only one shell at a time, except in doubles. Close the gun only when it is your turn to shoot. If a delay occurs, remove the shell.
• Do not lean over to pick a shell out of a box on the ground or a dropped shell or to pick up empties. Have your shells where you don't have to bend over to get them in a shell holder bag or vest.
• Do not raise your gun until the shooter ahead of you fires.
• Do not allow ejected shells from your gun to hit or annoy other shooters.
• You will load your weapon when you are in a firing position just before your turn to shoot.
• You should keep track of how many shots you fire. You will fire at 5 targets from each position normally rotating turns with the other shooters (States and Nationals event may require 10 targets at each position).
• Take your time there are no time limits, call for the bird when your ready.
“PULL”
• Each shooter calls “PULL” to send a target out (WHEN READY, No points are given for speed so take your time).
• Each shooter from left (point 1) to right (point 5) fires at a single target rotating turns.
• Time your shooting to establish rhythm in the squad. Call in a loud clear voice so that there is no confusion about when the puller should respond.
• Shooter that starts on point 1 begins the volley again.
• Each shooter from left to right fires at a target rotating turns. This cycle continues until all shooter fire at 5 targets from that position ( may be 10 targets at state / national completions).
• Shooters remain at their post until the fifth man has fired his last shot, then move to the next position when tolded to change. At the end of the round, stand facing the traps until the last man has fired the last shot. You will move to the next firing position with a empty shotgun pointed in a safe direction.
• A “Safe Direction” is down range towards the ground for positions 1 to 5. When position 5 is moving behind the shooters to a position 1 strait up in the air. Then when at new position down range towards the ground.
• Never load your gun before changing positions. When going from position five to position one, turn to the right to avoid bumping guns with the shooter coming from post four.
• Puller calls “Rotate”.
• Shooters move safely to next position.
• Puller calls out results for each shooter beginning with position 1.
(Example: 5,3,4,5,4) Indicates number of hit targets.
• Shooter If you are leadoff, do not fire until all squad members are in position after each change. Then the shooter that started on position 1 begins the volley again. This cycle continues until all shooter fire at 5 targets from each position (10 targets at state / national completions).
• Puller upon completion of the course of fire calls “ END and OUT”.
• Shooters will open actions and ensure shotguns are empty place safes on if possible and move to the gun rack area controlling the muzzle of the shotgun so as not to point it at anyone. Then place thier shotgun in the gun rack safely.
• DO not allow unsafe acts to occur. Every shooter may call “CEASE FIRE” . Cease fire means all shooters will immediately stop firing and place their weapon in a safe condition.
SHOTGUN MALFUNCTIONS:
• Range Safety Officers (RSO) will investigate and correct unsafe conditions.
• Range Safety Officers (RSO) are in charge of the range.
• Any mechanical problem with a gun (safety on, shell in wrong chamber, gun won’t shoot, or soft load, etc.)
Note: On soft load (SQUIB ROUND) it will sound and feel diffrent, check for a wad left in the chamber. This can be deadly. A shooter must ensure the shotgun barrel is not obstucted. Shooters will request help from RSO if thier is any abnormal situation while firing.
Also note: In a soft load, if no wad is left in the barrel, it is ruled as a loss and not a failure to fire. The wad must be shown to the puller/scorekeeper to qualify as a failure to fire.
• Two failures to fire are allowed in a singles/handicap or doubles round (25/50). These are labeled by the scorekeeper as F1, F2, and further failures to fire are considered losses in that round.
SCORING:
No target – Bird breaks coming out of the target house. You are not required to shoot. Best to go back to the beginning of your routine then call for the next target. Don’t panic take your time.
Loss – Bird not broken or in other words a miss.
Chip – If you see a chip come from your target and the score calls loss you may challenge the call. It must be immediate and your team mates will have to back you up that they saw the chip also for the score to change the score.
ATTITUDE: 90% of Shooting is mental. Shooter should refrain from making negative statements. Negative attitudes cause poor shooting.
TAKE YOUR TIME. KEEP YOUR COOL. Focus on safety and the shooting fundamentals.
Strive for successive hits,… and consistency!
Every mistake is a opportunity to get better.
BE POSITIVE LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES.
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.
BE POSITIVE.
Do not focus or mentally respond negatively to distractions. Gun jams, misfires, background noise is all part and parcel to the game. The moment you allow yourself to be distracted your score will suffer. Learn to block out distractions by listening and observing them, then they will no longer be distractions, just normal sounds and events.
Don’t get down on your team mates if they are having a bad day. Everyone will have a bad day. You’re a Team. If your not satisfied with your shooting. Ask your coach what am I doing wrong?
EMERGENCY ACTIONS:
• If an emergency occurs all shooters will cease fire and make their firearms safe and render first aid within the level of their training.“LIFE SAVER” will be shouted by all.
• Range Safety Officer will activate the First Aid Emergency Action Plan. RSO's will make notification on radio to contact advanced medical help per Range SOP’s.
• The primary concern of every shooter … even over shooting excellence…. Must be safe gun handling.
BREAK ONEAT A TIME, GOOD LUCK!
