2009 SPRING ICE BREAKER RECAP
BEST 5 TEAMS IN THE BUILDING (who didn’t go undefeated)!
1.  Texas D1 Ambassadors (5-1)
- this could be Max Ivany's best all around team ever.  This team is deep with interchangeable components at the guard and wing spots.  That's the very reason he registered the team twice in order to get six very competitive games against some very good teams.  After overcoming the mental drain of allowing the Houston Hoops to come from 23pts down, the city of Austin's leading scorer Cody Doolin drilled a 30 ft shot to force overtime, and TDA eventually pulled off the win (92-91).  Team team's only loss came during the 3rd game of their travel day - vs Swoosh Select Black.  Impressive wins over Rashard Lewis, Superstars Elite, Clippers, and All 4 Sports Dream Team Red.  Louisiana 1st team All State selection Brian Williams and RJ McGhee add extra octane to this team’s fuel.  Plus, every summer team needs the awe-factor, DJ Stephens sports a 42" vertical.
Best Performers:  Daniel Alexander 6'8 f (Dripping Springs HS 2010) played smooth and smart from the forward spot.  He took smaller defenders to the block, and faced up vs bigger guys.  RJ McGhee 6'5 sg (Istrouma, LA HS) knocked down several three pointers (6 vs Clippers) throughout the event.  Cody Doolin 6'0 cg (Austin Westlake HS) punished zone defenses, and came up with big baskets whenever team needed.

2.  Houston Hoops (3-1)  -  every time the Hoops played, there was a standing room only crowd.  Either fans were extremely curious or just wanted to get a first hand glimpse of nationally anointed young guard tandem of J’Mychael Reese and LJ Rose.  Well, considering the pair played 17s last summer, I expected more punch and aggression.  Watching them is like listening to smooth jazz.  I love me some David Koz, Boney James, Earl Klugh, etc but you don’t exactly prefer to hear that type of music in the club.   The summer circuit is just like one big club, every weekend, and most fans pay their money to dance, or at least feel the urge to do so.   Meanwhile, New Mexico native Alex Kirk made his debut with the Hoops.  He gives them a legit big man who can take pressure off and allow Tobi Oyedeji to operate facing the basket.  After losing in OT to Texas D1 Ambassadors (91-90), the Hoops proceeded to pick up double digit wins over  J Prince Hoopstars (76-51), Swoosh Select (57-47), and Team Genesis (57-41).
Best Performers:   Brandon “Snap” Peters 6’1 cg (Yates HS 2010) fresh off his state title run, “Snap” provided plenty of customary high light dunks and led the team with 21ppg including a 35pt showing in the loss.  He is certainly one of the area’s best defensive players.  Tobi Oyedeji 6’7 f (Bellaire HS 2010) had his motor running on both ends as usual.   Even displayed his personal high school version of Olajuwon’s “Dream Shake” while scoring 14pts vs Swoosh Select.   Sheldon McClellan 6’5 w (Bellaire HS 2011) appeared to be settling in just fine (20pts vs J Prince), then in the second half vs Swoosh Select, responded to his lack of playing time by leaving the bench and consequently leaving the team in only his first weekend.

3.  Houston Swoosh Select Black (2-1)  - stepped up big time with a very impressive win over Tx D1 Ambassadors (81-69).   Their only loss came vs Hoops (57-47), but that same Hoops team loss to Tx D1 Ambassadors which evened things out.   This team relied heavily on their guard productivity, and that’s the most important position in summer ball.
Best Performers:  Jamel Outler  6’4 sg (Bellaire HS 2010) put together the best succession of three games I’ve ever seen him play (and I’m serious as a heart attack).  Averaged 20ppg, and the only game he scored under 20pts, was the only time the Swoosh Select loss.  If you saw Jamel play this past HS season, and left the gym wishing he would give more – well, he gave it all to everybody who tried to guard him at the SIB.  Jamal Branch 6’2 pg (Atascocita HS 2011) certainly proved he was a notch above any other pg in the building.  Got to the rack at will and had one of those looks in his eyes as though this was all about business – nothing personal at all.  Anthony Collins 5’11 pg (Westbury Christian 2011) complimented Branch with his aggressiveness and all out hustle.  Really got after it on the defensive end, and has established himself as a lock down perimeter defender.

4.  J Prince Hoopstars (3-1)  -  continued to live up to their reputation as some of the hardest playing, well coached players in the building.  They opened the event by crushing Texas D1 Ambassadors – Laredo (77-33).   Quite frankly, I assume responsibility for pairing those two teams, but I figured any team Max Ivany places under his umbrella would not fall 44pts in the hole.   Next up, Keith White’s bunch was a 25pt concussion vs Hoops (76-51) followed by wins over Franchise All Stars (55-49) and ISTI (67-41).
Best Performers:   Henry Riasco 6’4 wg (Spring Woods HS 2010) missed the entire high school season because of zoning reasons, and you could tell he had been waiting on the SIB for quite some time.  Although not in game speed shape, Henry knocked down the threes from either corner, and mixed it up well around the glass.  Henry Buckley  6’10 c (Wheatley HS 2009) is the state’s best kept defensive weapon.  He didn’t just block shots, but this long arm kid has advanced to the point where he’s trying to punch a hole in the ball every time he swats.   Jared Brown 6’2 g (Klein Collins HS 2010) is a name come July will attract the eyes of several mid major college programs.   He slashed well, popped the jumper well, and most importantly he defended like his life defended on it.  Unfortunately, that’s a lost art among most of our pampered youth today.
5.  Rashard Lewis Southeast Texas Elite (2-1)  -  presented a good mixture of unsigned seniors and underclassmen.    This squad is deep and talented at each position except in the frontcourt.  The Beaumont, Texas based bunch dropped a heartbreaker to Texas D1 Ambassadors (58-55), beat Swoosh Select White (56-49) and Celtics (60-53).
Best Performers:  DeCarlos Frank 6’1 cg (Beaumont Ozen HS 2010) needed the SIB to redeem his elite status after a high school season which didn’t meet our expectations, especially considering the fact that he graced the front cover of Da Magazine.  DeCarlos led the team with 15ppg.  Jamar Gulley  6’4 w (Beaumont Central HS 2009) strong bodied south paw looked well with his mid range game and attacking the rim.  I’d be surprised if this kid is still with the team after April, and would be a good thing – a college scholarship had been offered and accepted.

DOZEN (12) TEAMS TO KEEP AN EYE ON!
Celtics (3-1) - after winning their first three games, coach walked right in the middle of the lobby and made I grand standing speech about not having any competition and how great unsigned senior Kelsey Solomon was dominating the field.  Coach must have forgot, the SIB gives you exactly what you wish for.  Therefore, I tweaked the schedule and gave the Celtics an extra "put up or shut up" game vs Rashard Lewis.  Result, Celtics lost 60-53, but Solomon did not play in that particular contest.
Best Performers:  Kelsey Solomon 6'1 g (Worthing HS 2009) except for the final game, this long athletic guard was all over the place considering he double dipped into the Unsigned Sr division as well.
Brandon Chatman 5'10 pg (Marshall HS 2010) used his lightening quick ball speed to dash and dart through most defenses.  Made plays on both ends of the court and was an extension cord of positive energy to teammates.
Clippers (2-1) -  Considering this team isn’t relatively deep, they fared pretty well at the SIB.  The Clippers could be the only team in the state who have played the 17s circuit for 3 years with the same lineup.  Randy Collins,  Drew Parker, and Cedric Jones all have started varsity together at LaPorte HS since ninth grade.  Byron Randle and unsigned senior Adrian Morales provided sparks from the wing, and reserve Blake Torres added a smooth dose of hustle and heart off the bench.  The Clippers knocked off San Antonio Spiece 17s (42-34) and Houston Elite (50-46).  The Clips managed to get a 13pt lead vs Texas D1 Ambassadors before running out of gas and losing (74-69).
Best Performers:   Randy Collins 6’5 pf (LaPorte HS 2010) is the team’s meat on the inside.  He led with 16.6ppg and showed off his newly reduced frame.  Byron Randle 6’2 cg (Friendswood HS 2010) provided the athleticism that enabled him to go right past defenders and get in position to score easy baskets. Randle was the only other player to average double figures, 13ppg.   Drew Parker 6’1 pg (LaPorte HS 2010) didn’t score a lot, and after evaluating him over the past six months, I’m convinced he’s much more comfortable with his role as the set up man than being a primary scorer.

Emeralds (3-1)  -  this female coached squad featured three senior starters from Madison HS.  They opened with a (52-41) win over Texas Heat, then turned around and dropped a 64-57 decision to the Inner City Cougars on Friday night.  However, the Emeralds regrouped to get wins over Coast 2 Coast (40-24) and L&S Airwalkers (53-41).
Best Performers:  Chad Jackson 5’11 wg (Madison HS 2009) plays with a swagger that is often supported by his game.  He could be one of the most overlooked seniors in the Houston area.  Ivan Pettit 6’3 sg (Madison HS 2009) simply made plays and used his height to get shot over the top of smaller defenders.
Jr Hardballers (3-1) -  as always, Rory Coleman marched into the SIB with a team anchored by unsigned seniors, and once again they proved to be a hard draw for most opposing teams.  They beat Houston Gold (59-41), Round Rock Dream Team (60-35), and Inner City Cougars (53-45) while dropping a nail biter vs TJ Ford Elite (62-61).
Best Performers:  Chris McDuffie 6’5 wf (Eisenhower HS 2009) is one of the area’s best unsigned wings.  He played well enough at the SIB to defend that label.  He’s long and plays even longer.   Charleton Jones 6’0 pg (Cinco Ranch HS 2009) ran the team and got his money in the meantime.   Scored 20pts vs Houston Gold.  Earned himself an official visit to Texas-Pan American this past weekend.

Superstars Elite (2-1) – every year we always expected the unexpected with summer coach John Eurey.  His secret weapons were winning the Joseph Young sweepstakes, and the return of post grad student Kirk Van Slyke to the lineup.  This team has the components to be better than any within Eurey’s past five years.   They survived a very exciting three overtime marathon to beat Total Package Black (92-86).  Lost to Texas D1 Ambassadors (65-52), and knocked off Port Arthur Heat (64-58).
Best Performers:  Joseph Young 6’2 sg (Yates HS 2010) looked good at his transition to the pg spot and even better at his natural sg position - evident by his 33pt outburst vs Total Pkg.   Kirk Van Slyke 6’8 f (Army Prep 2010) is about 15lbs heavier and tougher than a year ago.  Didn’t hesitate to slam it home with attitude when presented opportunity.  Plus, Kirk was fluid with his perimeter stroke.

TJ Ford Elite (2-1) – opened with a tough 73-56 loss vs D Gib Hoops which gives Gibson braggin rights over Ford when the two players hang out during the NBA off season.   However the team picked up quality wins over Jr Hardballers (62-61) and Katy Hoopstars (60-45) to complete a successful showing.
Beat Performers:  William Rose 6’6 f (Bellaire HS 2009) played with passion and made defenders pay with his lazy looking mid range shot.  Eze Akwari  6’2 w (Chavez HS 2009) is fun to watch because he routinely out hustles his man.  Very athletic and will sacrifice his body in a heartbeat.  One of those kids who could play bare footed and still produce same type numbers.

UNDEFEATED:  HOW WOULD THESE GUYS FARE vs ABOVE MENTIONED TEAMS?

UNDERCLASSMEN…
Although most of the teams we have informed you about participated in the 17s Division, there was a couple of 16s / 15s teams who made plenty of noise throughout the three day event:
Houston Suns Elite 2011 (3-0) -  pound for pound the most impressive team in the building.  This team comprised entirely of tenth graders, has plenty of swagger, speed, and talented guard play.  DeMarcus Johnson (Jones HS), Joe Miles (Jones HS) and Jacoby Harrison (Northshore HS) led the balanced attack.
Houston Suns Elite Hart (4-0) -  this group of 10th graders won all three of their regular games, and picked up an extra win in the process.  Tre Frazier (Northshore HS), Jeremy Robinson (Northshore HS), and James Francis (Northshore HS) were the team’s brightest stars.
Houston Hoops 15s (3-0)  -  Two thirds of the team attend either Elkins HS (Chance Allen, Dantrai Simmons, Darius Mukes, Kirby Linscomb, TJ Rhodes) or Bellaire HS (Malcolm Glover, Brett Jordan).  They won every game by double digits, and one thing’s for certain…these guys are very good – and they know it, too.
Houston Defenders (3-0)  -  anchored by twins Aaron and Andrew Harrison, this team is one of the most feared amongst their eighth grade peers, so it’s understandable why they would want to play against teams a year older – but two and three years older, and still go unbeaten?  That scary.
Gulf Coast Blue Chips 14s (3-0)  -  two of their three wins were against 15s teams.  Keep an ear open for names like Paris Clayton, Tyree Gray, Deosic West, Mandy Williams, and Jeff Beverly.
