CONGRATULATIONS FESTIVAL TEAM-2006 NATIONAL FESTIVAL CHAMPIONS H2O CROWNED CHAMPION BY US FIELD HOCKEY The annual field hockey festival hosted by USA Field Hockey was held in Indio, California over the Thanksgiving holidays and a Harford County based field hockey club team, “H2O”, came home with a USA National Hockey Festival gold medal. In the world’s largest field hockey event, over 3,800 athletes compete for the coveted gold medals in a three day event. Teams from all over the country and Canada are represented at the tournament. H2O was one of three teams in Maryland to win a championship and the only team in Maryland to win in the U16 age group. By winning, H2O gets an automatic berth for next year’s tournament also to be held in Indio, California. “H2O”, also known as Harford Hockey Organization, was formed three years ago by Natalie Magdeburger to provide opportunities for girls from this area to compete in local, regional and national events. The H2O team is made up of girls who play on a number of local high school teams including Bel Air, CMW, Fallston, Friends, John Carroll, Notre Dame Prep and North Harford. H2O is known for their signature neon pink socks and has put over 28 girls into the USA Field Hockey Futures’ program since the team was formed (girls are selected and designated as future collegiate athletes and receive special training/instruction from USA Field Hockey). During the three day National Festival tournament, team members Alicia McCarty, Laura Carman and Brooke Peterson exploded on the offense and scored 6 of the team’s 8 goals with Michaela Mitchem adding a critical goal on post against team Seacoast United. Jessica Magdeburger recorded a goal on a penalty stroke in the final minutes against second place team IFHCK of Kentucky. Goalie Katie Gerbes recorded three solo shutouts and combined with Team Captain Lauren McGehee to record another shutout. McGehee, seeing limited playing time while still recovering from ACL surgery, returned to the goal for a half for the first time all season and did not allow a goal. Gerbes allowed only three goals during the entire tournament. Erin Lewns recorded two critical defensive stops during play including a lunging stick stop in mid air. Alicia McCarty, injured in the final game, returned to play after her injury but could not be present for the medal ceremony as she was taken to the hospital for stiches to the face. The Festival team was comprised of Jessica Magdeburger (Friends), Michaela Mitchem (CMW), Kelsey McKeon (NHHS), Lauren McGehee (John Carroll), Katie Gerbes (Fallston), Katie Conner (Fallston), Kristin Tracy (CMW), Molly Mistr (Notre Dame Prep), Rachel Cooke (Fallston), Maddie Salamone (Bel Air), Cara Canington (CMW), Erin Lewns (North Harford), Laura Carman (North Harford), Brooke Peterson (Bel Air), Betsy Reightler (North Harford), Alicia McCarty (Bel Air), Allison Sibiski (Fallston), Amanda Malkowski (CMW), Libby Nichols (Friends), Katie Levy (Friends). The team was coached by Natalie Magdeburger and Martha Mitchem. Alicia McCarty is missing from the team medal picture because she was in the hospital; however, the team held a board with her name on it and placed a medal on the board in Alicia’s honor. H2O would not have had a successful tournament without the help of a number of local supporters including Pat Troyer of Hawks Nest Hockey, Mike Getz and Joe Dorman of Norrisville Parks and Recreation, the UPS Store and Festival Seafood. H2O is getting ready to begin their indoor field hockey season and teams are scheduled to play their qualifier tournament in Richmond, Virginia in December. The teams will also compete locally in the Hawks Nest League held at Just For Kids as well as at college events held regionally through March. H20 has teams in the U12, U14, U16 and U19 age brackets for indoor play. |
