2011 Spring Great Falls Madrid

Sunday, April 17
Madrid drops second in a row to MSC Mutiny

The Madrid fell to 1-2 on the season after a 4-2 loss to the MSC Mutiny.  The Mutiny scored two goals quickly in the first half to make it 2-0.  The Madrid fought back to make it 2-1 by a goal from Jacob; however, a dropped ball by the goalie in front of the net for an easy tap-in goal put the Madrid behind 3-1.  They continued to fight back to a 3-2 score with a nice goal by Mikey; however, an own goal in the final minutes solidified a 4-2 loss.  the Madrid must regroup as a team quickly for their next opponent, the undefeated NVSC Junior Royals 98.

Monday, April 11
Madrid loses to BRYC Elite 4-2

The Madrid lost their first game of the season to Braddock Road by a score of 4-2.  The game was marred with critical defensive mistakes from the beginning.   Madrid quickly found themselves down 2-0 by miscommunications in the backfield and easy goals.  Fighting back, they were able to tie the game 2-2 (goals by Jacob and Mikey) midway through the second half; however, with two critical injuries in the starting backfield, two more costly defensive errors resulted in a 4-2 loss.

Monday, April 4
Madrid wins season opener against WWSC Wolves

The Madrid played WWSC Wolves at Seibel Farms in New Windsor, MD on a cold and blistery day Sunday and won a hard fought match 2-0.  Solid defensive play by Daniel, Mitchell, and Andrew, and a key goalie clear by Darius resulted in a through-ball to Jacob who took it 15 yards in a one-on-one with the WWSC goalie and tapped it by him to the right corner for his first goal.  Mid-way through the second half, Logan won a ball in the right mid-field, moved it down the right side and chipped it over the center defense with enough finesses to allow Jacob to win it before the goalie came out.  Jacob then scored his second goal with a soft-touch past the goalie to make it 2-0.  Great job Madrid.

Sunday, March 27
Madrid plays in the Baltimore Mania

The Madrid played in the Elite Divsion of the Baltimore Mania soccer tournament on 26/27 March.  The Elite Division consisted of two brackets.  The Madrid's opponents were the Baltimore Bays Comets, Erie Admirals SC Blue (PA), and FC Copa Inter (NJ).   Madrid played Erie Admirals first, winning 3-1.  A lackluster performance in the second game resulted in a tough 1-0 loss to the Baltimore Bays Comets (who eventually made it to the Championship game).  Playing for pride and a second place finish in their bracket, the Madrid defeated FC Copa Inter 5-0 to finish the tournament with a 2-1 record.

Wednesday, March 16
Madrid wins the Jefferson Cup in Richmond

The Great Falls Madrid went undefeated (3-0-1) in the Superior Division of the Jefferson Cup playing teams from New York, South Carolina, and Charlottesville (VA).  A truly exciting weekend of soccer was only eclipsed by an even more exhilirating finish in the championship game, as the Madrid brought home the Championship Cup after winning on penalty kicks.  Congratulations Madrid!

Monday, February 28
Madrid loses to NVSC Jr. Royals Blue

The Madrid played the Division 1 NVSC Jr. Royals '98 Blue at Helwig Park in Manassas, VA.  Unfortunately, the Madrid were outplayed from the opening whistle and lost 7-0 to a very strong NVSC team.  Luckily, the Madrid can go back to the drawing board and begin improving in their weak areas, and hopefully perform better next time.

Madrid defeats VSA Heat '98 Blue in Winter Outdoor League

The Madrid defeated the VSA Heat '98 Blue 16-0 at Long Park in Haymarket, VA.  It was an all-around team effort that saw seven different Madrid players score while holding the Heat scoreless.  Great job Madrid!

Monday, January 31
Madrid goes undefeated in North Carolina Triangle Friendlies

The Great Falls Madrid traveled to Fayetteville, North Carolina from 28-30 January to participate in the North Carolina Triangle Friendlies Soccer Tournament.  The Madrid competed against all TFC teams from across the state of North Carolina and compiled a record of 2 wins, 0 losses, and 2 ties.  Their record, however, was not indicative of the domination over their opponents.  Facing teams that played a very defensive-style game where they crowded the box with all eleven players, the Madrid found it difficult to finish and put the ball into the back of the net.  Despite an overwhelming margin in favor of the Madrid in time of possession, shots on goal, and time played on opponents half of the field, the Madrid wasn't able to dominate their opponent in the "Goals For" category.  In four games, they outshot their opponents 50-7, scoring only 10 goals while the opponents capitalized on crucial defensive mistakes by the Madrid to score 4 goals.  Nonetheless, the Madrid played well together, learned a lot, and most of all, had a ton of fun!  Congrats on the successful tournament boys.

Tuesday, January 18
