Orioles Defeat Twins and Stormy Weather to Win Gold League Championship

Friday, June 19, was the night of the Golden Valley Little League Gold League championship game.  The fifth seeded Orioles took on the second seeded Twins in the battle for the Gold League crown.  Both teams played two innings of competitive baseball before lightning led to a one hour long weather delay, with the Orioles leading, 2-1.  When the players got back on the diamond an hour later, the Twins were able to tie the ballgame at three runs apiece during their half of the third inning.  This was the last big inning for the Twins offensively, however, as they were held scoreless for the final three innings by Oriole pitcher, Steven Fitzsimmons.  The Orioles capitalized on Fitzsimmons’ superb pitching by scoring five runs over the course of the next two innings.  Their offense was led by Harrison Collins, Kyle Palmquist, and Jordan Todhunter.  Collins and Palmquist each hit a triple, and Todhunter went 2 for 3, with two singles.  In the end, the Orioles were able to hang onto their late lead, winning the Gold League championship, 8-3.

The Twins were able to hang in the game due in large part to the play of Alex Kyle and Erik Nelson.  Kyle went 2 for 3, with a double and a single.  Nelson went 1 for 3, with a double and a run scored.

After the game, Steven Fitzsimmons said of his team’s performance, “My team did really well.  For us to win the championship from fifth place was amazing.”  On his personal performance, “My hitting was okay, but my pitching was much better.  I think I pitched well because of all of the help that Coach Palmquist has given me this year.”

2009 All Star Guidelines

In the next two week, GVLL will be selecting four teams of players for post-season play.  The teams will be the 11/12, 10/11, 9/10 and 8/9 teams.  These teams will be playing for our league against other Little Leagues in our district.  By Little League rules, these teams cannot be announced before June 15th, and we are planning on making the announcement on that day of who has been selected for those teams.

We are posting the 2009 All Star Selection Guidelines for you to review.  Our goal is to provide you with all the information you can understand this process and  how the board selects the players.

If you have any questions about the process, please contact Steve Baker, Pete Birkeland, or Pat Dale.

We will be posting more information regarding our teams as we have news.
