SANDY'S SURVIVES SCARE; WINS OVER TOM'S 27-19 IN FIRST GAME

As it turns out the 5 run "equalizer" given to Tom's is NOT the rule.  Unlimited runs per inning to the B team is.  Oops!  Despite a scare in the 6th when Tom's scored 9 we rode a strong start and finish to pull away in the top of the 7th to put away the pesky Tom's.

We scored 5, 4, 4, 0, 3, 5 & 6 runs to get to 27.  Tom's generously provided 7 walks and made 3 errors to contribute to our total.  3 of those walks came in the 1st inning.  Frank drove home 2 with a double and, after 2 outs were made, the next three singled to earn us our 5.

In the second Gary, Bill K and Vinny each singled.  John K tripled to drive home 2, and in turn scored on Russ' grounder to third when the 3B didn't look at John and tossed over to first to get the second out.

Frank B singled and Phil lofted a high fly to left that went the necessary and not much more for a 2 run dinger.  Frank Graziano, playing in his first game with us, got his first hit and scored on Tom D's single played into a triple.  John M sac'd Tom home for our 4 runs.

After a donut in the 4th we forged an ugly crooked number in the 5th.  Jim F and Frank B singled.  Jim took 3rd on the single.  Phil then hit a hard ball to SS that he mis-played.  The ball rolled a short way into the OF and Frank attempted to get to 3rd but was out by a couple feet.  Jay hit a long sac to deep LC and Phil took advantage of a casual toss in to score from 2B.  Frank G banged out his first Sandy's double and scored on Tom's 3rd single of the night (Tom D is recovering from a hamstring pull and can only hobble to first; all his hits are singles!).

The bottom of the lineup was hot in the 6th, scoring 5 in 6 at bats.  Billy B benefited from a SS error to reach first.  Gary B got his third straight hit and Bill Kokoszka, rejoining us after recovering from a bicep tear, loaded the bases with a single.  Vinny then hit a double down the 1B line to plate two.  John K singled in a run and Pat R finished our scoring with a double down the LF line.

Tom's closed the score to 21-19 in the bottom of the 6th. With them holding the hammer, 2 runs was probably not enough.  The top of the order ensured that, scoring 6 times.  Russ singled and Jim F hit a sure HR to LC.  Phil tripled and Jay hit a HR into the trees in LF.  Frank reached on an error at SS.  Tom D (4-4 on the nite), John M and Bill B each singled to end the scoring.

Jay's 4 RBI led in that dept.  Jim F, Vinny and John K knocked in 3 apiece.  9 of the 14 batters knocked in at least one run and 12 of 14 scored at least once.  Everybody had at least one hit.

The victory was a good hitting team win with no overwhelming superior performances but top to bottom contribution.  The defense was mostly good with 6 innings of much better than average play.   FranK G demonstrated soft hands and a cannon arm as a great addition to our infield.  Frank also plays with 507 in Monmouth and is a recent addition to the team Sandy's tournament team merged with, East Coast Softball Club.
