EAST COAST 17, SANDY’S 16
Although we could have won by several runs had we not made 4 particularly awful errors, it was, again, our poor hitting that slammed the door on getting a win. We started well, getting 4 runs in the first while allowing one. We repeated that in the second. But, in a sign of things to come, Phil came up with a runner on third, with just one out, and could not get the ball out of the infield, popping up foul to 3B. The next batter was walked and Jay hit into a force to end the inning with 4 in. Things to come were later than the 3rd as we put 5 across the plate. EC would score 4, however, to keep the game within reach. They would fall behind by 1 more in the 4th as the meat of our batting order could manage only a single run. But it was one more run than EC scored. We came unglued in the 5th and 6th, repeatedly giving up bases by a combination of lousy fielding and bases on balls. As EC scored 10 in the 5th and 6th to finally overtake us and go ahead by 2 we made 6 consecutive outs, posting 2 zeros in a row. We made some noise in the open 7th, getting our first 4 on base and scoring twice, but again, 3 straight outs. EC got two men on to lead off the 7th and a sharp single through the infield plated their go-ahead, walk-off hit. Russ, Eddie and Tony were each 3-4 to lead the hitting.
