SANDY’S CLOSES OUT WITH 6 AND HANGS ON TO WIN 26-22

We were up 15-2 as the Elks came to the plate in the bottom of the third and the game looked to be a laugher.  But the Bayville Elks are a game team and as we came to the plate in the top of the 7th the score was Sandy’s 20, Elks 19.

We started strong.  Double, single, triple, oops, and, later, 3 singles and a walk to push home our 5.

The bottom of the lineup got a double and 2 singles and a RBI to start the 2d.  Russ then drove in a run with a single, as did Jim, Phil and John K.

Bayville got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd with a couple runs.  In the 3rd we scored 5 for the third time in a row.  Russ closed out the scoring with a HR to LC.

The Elks put up 4 in the 3rd and 5 in the 4th.  In between we did a donut.  That changed in the top of the 5th, however, as we again put up 5.  Phil walked, John K doubled and Jay boomed a 3-run shot to left.  Three singles and a SAC got us the other 2 runs.

The Elks scored 3, we got zip, then they got 5.  The 8 runs were all against Phil, who came on to relieve John, who was tiring.  Phil "enjoyed" some of the worst defense in history.  Phil started a DP for the first two outs in the 3 run 5th and caught a grounder to toss out the runner going to first to end the inning.  We compounded our holey defensive woes in the top of the 6th by scoring nada. The Elks got from 6 – 8 outs in their half of the 6th as we managed not to convert three pop flies and three grounders – one the DP variety.  Our defensive largesse led to 5 runs.

In the top of the 7th our bats came alive again.  Frank hit a screaming 2-run HR following another hustle double by Jim.  5 singles and a walk led to a 6 run inning, putting us up 26-19.

John M re-entered as pitcher in the 7th and nailed down the game, holding the ever-determined Elks to just 3 runs.

Gary Bendian had a great game, going 4-4 with 5 rbis.  Frank and Jay each had 3.  Jim, Frank and Jay each scored 3 times.  Altogether the team managed 34 hits including 7 doubles and 3 HR.
