Tuesday, June 2 BAYVILLE ELKS COMEBACK BID DENIED AS SANDY’S WALKS OFF WITH THE WIN, 22-21 Sandy’s jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with 7 hits from the first 8 batters. We left 2 on in the second after the Elks scored 2 then lost the lead in the top of the third, giving up 5 runs. The top of the order led off and continued from where they left off in the first. 5 of 7 batters earned hits and, assisted by an error, 5 scored. The Elks came back with 3 and we had no answer, going down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 4th. Both teams scored 5 in the 5th. Aided by a key error in center we manufactured our 5 from 5 hits and a sacrifice. Jay hit our first HR of the night to close the scoring, leaving the score tied at 15. The Elks put up a donut in the 6th and we thanked them with a four spot. John K led off with a booming HR to LC. A single, error, double and single pushed 4 across the plate. The Elks fought right back and went up 21-17 by scoring 6 in the top of the 7th. Jim hustled out a double and Frank beat out a slow bouncer to the left of SS, putting the tying runs on base. Phil waited a couple pitches and deposited the third pitch about 20’ past the lightpole in LC for a walk-off HR. John Masterson pitched well, walking just 2. The Elks benefited from our lack of knowledge of them as they pounded a half-dozen balls over our heads in the outfield, forcing us to reluctantly concede that they can hit with some power – more than we were crediting them for! Frank and Phil each scored 4 runs. Tom and Jim scored 3. Phil drove in 6 while Frank had 4 RBI. Jay knocked in 3. Frank (4-4) and Billy (3-3) were each perfect at the plate. Altogether we amassed a respectable 27 hits.
