DESPERADOS
Head Coach Brian Dean
Gilbert, Arizona

Welcome to Desperados Football

"Victory is reserved for those willing to pay the price."

The measure of victory...

So many times we all get caught up on the way we measure victory or success. Society has trained us to look at wins vs. losses- the more wins you have the more successful you must be. Well, personally I do not think that the traditional method of measuring success can be applied to the 2009 Desperados Football team. So I wanted to share with all of you how Coach Brian, myself and the rest of the staff is measuring our success for this season. I hope that many of you are seeing the same thing we are. As always, please feel free to share any and all comments or questions or concerns that you may be having.

First of all when we started this season we had 23 players- and were to get another 2 players after the first two weeks. After various issues, we are now down to 20 players. This makes us one of the smallest (or THE smallest)team in GPW and most of the other associations. To add to that, we have the LARGEST amount of first time football players in the history of GPW. There are 14 boys on the team that have never played tackle football before, and several boys who have never played a team sport until now. From a coaching standpoint hopefully the shear magnitude of challenges is clear. No one could have predicted just how much potential each and every one of these boys has, all of the coaches are simply ecstatic over where our players ability can go in the future. It may not be all seen this year, or next year, but as each boy grows and matures hopefully their love for the game will grow too.

While many teams in the league are struggling to even get close to their fundraising goal- WE HAE ALREADY MET OURS. While many teams are dealing with parents fighting on the sideline - WE HAVE THE BEST AND MOST SUPPORTIVE PARENTS. While many teams threaten, beg, plead and bribe their players to arrive at practice and games on time- OUR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS EARLY! While other teams are disciplining players who are mean to each other, academically not eligible, or having issues at school- OUR BOYS ARE RESPECTFUL AND TREAT EAcH OTHER AS BROTHERS. (or course we have our occasional arguments or whatever). While other teams are praying for the clock to run out when they are losing - OUR PLAYERS< OUR FANS Not bad when you consider how many players and pieces
that is. Oops, one more- while other teams have no one bringing half time fruit or end of game drink- WE HAVE GREAT SNACKS EVERYTIME-- AND WE HAVE REFRESHING COLD GATORADE EVERY WEEK!Oh gosh- I do have one more--- While many teams can not pay parents to run the chain gang- WE HAVE THE BEST 3 IN THE STATE- ALong with the chain gang manager (thanks Mr. SMith for keeping them in line)

Is it hard to lose? Sure it is. But do you all see the level of improvement in our team? If you don't, I will share with you that the GPW President commented this weekend that she has seen a MAJOR improvement in the level of play from our team. The light bulbs are on! They are understanding the big picture. Every one of our boys has a fighting spirit and a will to keep going, even when it may seem like there is no hope. Of course I would be remiss if I did not credit our fans for this attitude. A huge thank you goes to every friend and family member who is there each week to support the Desperados- hearing the cheering voices keeps the boys feet moving and hearts pumping for one more play.

Thank you from the bottom of the coaching staff's heart- we are proud of all of the boys. We may be small this season- but just wait till next season!

Practice this thursday will NOT be at Desert Ridge- it will be either at Highland High or perhaps South Valley junior high. Don't worry about directions just yet, as soon as I get the final word I will let you all know. We should know tomorrow!

One of our dedicated parents has begun creating a website for the team. Please check out DesperadosFootball.com when you have a chance. Any feedback is appreciated- and if you have photos or video that can be uploaded please share.

We need to begin brainstorming where we would like our end of season party to be.. I know it is early , but we can always benefit from being prepared.

Thank you for reading this novel (sorry) We were just so proud of the boys yesterday, and even though we lost the battle- we are winning the war!
