Lady Owls take hits but are certain they'll still have punch

The 2005 Garland Lady Owls softball team will have a chance to be
just as good as this year's team. Because of the talent leaving, that might be difficult for some to believe.

Garland coach Cindy Mosteller is not one of them.

The Lady Owls will graduate three prolific players in Brittney
Cargill, Amberly Fuller and Stacy Braddock. Garland, which won 24
of 27 games this year, including a 13-0 run to the District 12-5A
title, also will lose Callie Stubbs, a power-hitting left fielder,
and utility fielder Becky Clevenger.

That group will be difficult to replace, but the team returns loads
of talent, and Mosteller said she expects another district
championship next year.

Garland advanced to the Region II semifinals in each of the last two
years, losing to Tomball both times. This season ended Friday with a
6-3 loss to the Cougars, as sophomore pitcher Amanda Pitzenberger held Garland to five hits.

As for Garland's postseason aspirations next year, Mosteller said
anything is possible.

"Tomball beat us with a sophomore pitcher," she said. "I think we'll
be just fine."

For the moment, freshman Whitney Wilson appears the front-runner to
succeed Braddock and Cargill on the mound. The senior duo accounted
for 284 strikeouts, and Braddock allowed only five earned runs in 84
innings.

Wilson, who became the starting shortstop after fellow freshman
Krystle Huey broke her leg early in the season, didn't pitch this
year. However, she often pitched batting practice.

"I've seen her practice, and she's just as good as I am," said
Cargill, who went 13-1 this year. "She has a screwball that is just
awesome. She pitches to us, and no one can hit her – and we're a
hitting team."

Cargill said Wilson's ability to move the ball with a variety of
pitches makes her effective.

The soft-spoken Wilson said that she gained confidence by facing her
hard-hitting teammates in practice.

"They are all so good, and I did pretty good against them," Wilson
said. "That makes me feel good."

Wilson won't be the only hurler in Mosteller's arsenal.

There's Rachel Braddock – yes, another Braddock – who Mosteller said
at times reminds the coach of her older sisters, Stacy and Michele.
Rachel Braddock will be a sophomore next year.

Sophomore Jenny Knight will move up from junior varsity next year to
add pitching depth. Mosteller said she is a great "all-around"
player who demonstrates solid control.

Offensively, Garland will miss the graduating seniors. Cargill,
Braddock and Fuller were four-year starters who provided much of the
Lady Owls run support throughout the last several seasons.

Now, Lana Armstrong steps into that position. She, along with Amanda
Godfrey, will be the team's only seniors. Armstrong, the best
catcher in District 12-5A, batted .366 with 24 runs, eight doubles,
two triples, two home runs and 22 RBIs.

Freshman third baseman Brianna Love hit .392 with 28 runs, eight
doubles, three triples and 21 RBIs. Wilson contributed as well,
batting .338 with 15 runs, five doubles and 18 RBIs.

Mosteller expects others such as sophomores Vanessa Vice and Lyndsey
Lipscomb to have breakout seasons next year. The coach added that
she will have several talented freshmen next season, as well.

Cargill will play at Angelo State, which won this year's NCAA
Division II national championship, and Braddock is headed to
Oklahoma. Both were sad their Garland careers ended before they
reached the state tournament, but Cargill said she'll live
vicariously through her younger friends on the team.

"Some people might not think they are going to be as good because of
who is leaving," she said, "but I think they will be great. There is
so much talent there. They're going to be awesome."
