SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: LANA ARMSTRONG, GARLAND
11:08 PM CST on Sunday, March 20, 2005
By MONIQUE WALKER / The Dallas Morning News

What she did: Armstrong was 13-for-21 with four doubles, three triples,
a home run and 13 RBIs to lead Garland to two District 11-5A victories
and six victories in the Arlington tournament.
She also was an all-tournament selection.

Lana Armstrong

Who is she? Armstrong is a senior catcher who has started the last four seasons.
She signed with Illinois and is a three-time district defensive player of the year.

The stats: Armstrong is hitting .471 with 18 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

She said it: "I think this year, my major role is keeping the pitchers focused. ...
[My teammates] are young, but they are all so experienced. I don't have to guide them.
It's just about passing on the tradition."

Coach Cindy Mosteller said it: "Lana's been through it all. She came in as a freshman
with older pitchers, and now the tables have turned, and she has really helped with everything."

Did you know? Armstrong always wanted to play the guitar. ... She wants to study
kinesiology and become a high school softball coach and teacher. ... She is the youngest of three girls. ...
She likes New Kids on the Block and plays "Hanging Tough" on her voicemail message.
