Tryout FAQ

Welcome to the GSC 2009 Tryout Season

To help the players and the parents better prepare for the tryout process we have listed below a few of the Frequently Asked Questions that come up each season.  If the information you need is not listed below, please email the tryout coordinator at headcoach@goulbournsoccer.ca.

Tryouts?

The main purpose of holding a tryout is to determine the most suitable level for a player. A number of factors are used to determine this, such as; athletic ability (speed, endurance, agility), soccer technical skills (passing, shooting, juggling, etc), game skills (ball control/1st touch, possession, support, vision/decision making, play away from the ball, etc), attitude, coach-ability, punctuality, etc.  We will be asking all U12 and younger athletes to attend a pre-Tryout test session so that all tryouts will be game based (watch the website for more info).

U10/U11 Girls – a change for this season

For these age groups, Kanata Soccer (KSC) and Goulbourn Soccer (GSC) will be INTERLACING teams at the Premier level of play. Players are asked to register for tryouts with their home club. Premier level tryouts will be conducted according to the KSC tryout schedule. A link will be placed on the GSC website to see the KSC schedule. Both KSC and GSC will be hosting information nights where an overview of what’s happening will be discussed and a Q&A session will happen at this time. Not all details are worked out yet, but will be soon. Please keep an eye on our web site for updates as they become available.

How long are the tryouts and what is the cost?

The tryout fee for this year is $50.00. Each age group will have 3 – 1hr tryouts for each level i.e. Premier will have 3 tryouts, Div1 will also have 3 tryouts. Regional teams will have 2 – 2hr tryouts followed by 1 – 1hr tryout. You pay only one fee to tryout for as many teams as you like.

Releases

From time to time, players will be released from one level to the next level of play. This is absolutely the worst part of coaching – nobody enjoys it, but it is required sometimes. There will be absolutely no releases made by email. For U12 and under, coaches will contact Parents, at U13 and over, coaches may contact parents/players directly.

When does it all start?

Some age groups will be starting Monday, February 23, 2009. Typically Regional tryouts are first, followed by older groups, then younger players.

How do I know when my particular age group starts?

Watch the website closely. A schedule will be posted shortly but it WILL change. We will try our best to accommodate groups of players who are involved in playoffs or competitions which causes this schedule to change – sometimes significantly.

How do I find out who is the coach?

Head coaches will be selected before each age/level begins – check the website.

What do I need to do next?

Nobody will contact you before tryouts – check the website for the schedule carefully.

What to do if you can not make it to a tryout?

Simply notify the coach as soon as you know that you cannot make a tryout.  If you don’t know who the coach is, then email admin@goulbournsoccer.ca and let us know - the information will be passed on.

Which tryout should I attend?

Most athletes start by trying out at the highest level for their age group. However, you should NOT consider tryouts as a conditioning session. If you have no interest in playing Regional or believe it is beyond the players capability, please have them start at Premier or Div1.

The ERSL has changed names for division of play to comply with OSA – please see below chart.
