Saturday, December 6 Haters Wins 2008 Fall Championship The Haters won the 2008 Fall championship by sweeping a pair of games from Corozal. In game 1, the Haters broke open a 1-1 deadlock in the 5th inning and then pulled away to win 5-1. In the finale, the Haters jumped out early, building an 8-0 advantage. Corozal chipped away, but the Haters eventually cruised to a 10-4 victory to take the championship 2 games to none. Saturday, August 23 Licey Wins 2008 Summer Championship
Sunday, August 10 Marlins, Licey Advance to Championship After besting Assault in the completion of their suspended game, the Marlins advanced to the championship game by sweeping the Cobras with two convincing victories. Licey’s road to the finals was much more difficult, however. In game 1, Licey needed 17 innings to pull off a 5-4 victory over Mayhem, which then took the second game 7-4. In game 3, Mayhem built a 5-2 lead, but Licey rallied to take the game 6-5 and advance to the finals. Tuesday, August 5 Three Teams Advance To Semis; Marlins/Assault To Finish Suspended Game After besting the Browns in a one-game playoff, the Long Shots were eliminated by top-seed Mayhem after two 10-0 defeats. The Cobras also advanced to the semifinals with a sweep of the Bums. The first game was also a 10-0 mercy, but the second game remained scoreless until the 10thinning, at which point the Cobras rallied to win the contest 4-0. Licey took an opening nail-biter from Trash by a 2-1 margin, and then romped to a 13-4 series clincher in game two. The most convincing win of the day was the Marlins 18-0 victory over Assault in game one of their series. In the second game, however, Assault rebounded to knot things up with a 5-4 victory. The third and deciding game was suspended due to rain with the Marlins leading 3-2 heading into the bottom of the 4th. Tuesday, July 29 Regular Season Comes To An End; Browns And LongShots To Meet In One-Game Playoff The Cobras swept the Marlins to leap frog into the #2 seed. In game 1, the Cobras overcame a 7-0 deficit, before cruising to a 9-2 victory in game 2, which featured a triple play. Licey also used a sweep over Mayhem to lock down the #4 seed, while Trash took two from Assault to secure the #5 slot. Keeping with the theme, the Bums leapt from last place into the #7 seed by taking a pair from the LongShots, who will face off with the Browns in a one-game playoff for the final playoff slot. The Brown earned their way into the playoff by sweeping the Rebels, including a second game comeback that culminated in a 5-2 victory in 9 innings. Tuesday, July 22 Mayhem Clinches Division; All Other Seeds Still Up For Grabs While idle on a bye, Mayhem clinched their first every GHSBL regular season title after the Cobras were swept by Trash. The losses by the Cobras also opened the door for the Marlins, who were also off for the week, to take over second seed with a split in the two teams’ upcoming match-up. The Browns also kept their playoff hopes alive by sweeping two from the Long Shots. The two wins couple with two losses by the Bums against Licey as well as a split between the Rebels and Assault left every team with control of their own destiny heading into the final week. What’s more, every seed after the top spot remains up fro grabs in what should be an exciting season finale. Tuesday, July 1 Week 8 Highlights Mayhem solidified their hold on first place by taking two games from the Long Shots. The victories allowed Mayhem to increase their division lead to four games as the second place Marlins and Cobras split with the Browns and Licey, respectively. Meanwhile, the race for the remaining seeds tightened as Assault split with the Bums, while Trash and the Rebels traded victories. With only 6 games remaining, all but the first seed remain far from being determined. Wednesday, June 18 Week 6 Highlights After a slow start in both games of their doubleheader against the Browns, Mayhem used late inning rallies to earn a sweep. Game 1 was an early pitcher’s duel as Woody H. limited the Browns to 1 run before the offense erupted for 5 runs in the 7th inning. In game 2, John B. belted a go ahead homerun in the 6th inning en route to an 8-5 victory. The Marlins also earned a sweep, taking two games from the Bums by lopsided scores. Trash edged Assault in a close 4-2 contest before coasting to a 7-1 victory in the finale. At Marine Park, the Cobras and Rebels split their pair. In the opener, Cheech threw a masterpiece, while the Rebels bats supplied 9 runs of support. In game 2, the Cobras broke out for 5 first inning runs, but had to hold on for dear life as the Rebels late game rally fell short at 7-6. The Cobras offense was led by Carey, who had 3 RBIs and energized the team by escaping from a run down, and Jonathan, who belted an RBI triple and scored two runs. Licey and the LongShots also split their matchup to cap off the week. Wednesday, June 11 Week 5 Highlights The Long Shots fell into an early 6-0 hole in their first game against Trash, but then slowly chipped away as the game progressed. Trailing by one run in the bottom of the 7th, Tony Cuevas tied the game with an RBI single and then Jose Santana drove in the winning run as the LongShots came back to win 7-6. Tony also struck out 2 batters and earned the victory. In game 2, the LongShots continued swinging their hot bats as the top five batters in the order came around to score in the first inning, highlighted by a 3-run triple by Joe Losi. The LongShots cruised from there as Jose S. went the distance and struck out 3 batters. The Cobras handed Mayhem their first loss on the season in emphatic fashion with a 16-0 mercy. Rob M. provided several big hits and flashed his usual gold glove defense, while Carey P. and Santo C. also provided big hits. In game two, Mike I. threw a gem to get Mayhem back on the winning track with a 5-1 victory that featured a titanic homerun by Espo. In the remaining morning match-ups, the Marlins swept a pair from Assault, while Licey took two from the Rebels. In the afternoon, the Browns and Bums split a pair. In game 1, Sonny pitched a masterpiece for the Bums, shutting down the Browns bats to preserves a 3-0 victory. Game 2 was another low scoring affair, but this time the Browns prevailed 2-1 behind the strong pitching of Mike L., clutch hitting of Jimmy and the hustle of Chris L. Wednesday, June 4 Week 4 Highlights Mayhem remained undefeated on the season after taking a pair from the Bums. In the first game, Mayhem rallied in the seventh frame as Anthony E. crushed a mammoth HR to overcome a 6-5 deficit. In the bottom of the inning, the Bums stranded tying runner on third as Mayhem narrowly avoided its first defeat. In game 2, Mayhem pounced early and cruised to an 11-4 victory. The Marlins also swept a pair, besting the Rebels by scores of 2-1 and 5-0. The only split of the day came between Trash and Licey. In game 1, Licey rallied late to overcome an early hole and win going away by a score of 7-2. In game 2, it was Trash’s turn to come back and even the series with a 5-4 victory. In the remaining action on the day, the Cobras and Browns were postponed by rain with the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 4th inning. That game was suspended and will be resumed on a future date. Wednesday, May 7 Week 3 Highlights The Cobras swept two close battles from the Brooklyn Bums. In game 1, the Bums jumped ahead 2-0 in the first, but the Cobras responded with 5 runs of their own in the bottom half. After tacking on another run, the Bums crept close but fell short at 6-4. John A. earned the victory with strong pitching as well as a key defensive play by Chris B. In the finale, Ray and Joey A. engaged in a scoreless pitcher’s duel for 5 innings before Will J. singled in the first run of the game with two outs. Joey made the run stand up as he cruised to a 2-0 shutout win. The Long Shots and Marlins split their match-up. After falling behind 4-0 in the 1st, the Long Shots tied the score in the 4th inning thanks in part to a 2-run homerun by Steve G. After trading runs in the 6th, the Marlins scored 3 times in the top of the 8th inning. Undaunted by the deficit, the Long Shots rallied to tie on the strength of RBIs from Hondo and Curt, and then walked off with a victory after Walter’s bases loaded sac fly. In game 2, the Marlins took the lead in the 3rd inning and never looked back, cruising to a 9-3 win. Assault took on Licey at Marine Park and used an explosive offensive to take two. In game 1, Assault jumped out to an early lead and extended it to 8-2 on the strength of a grand slam from Dave O. In the bottom of the 5th, however, Licey rebounded for 5 runs to slice the deficit to one run. The comeback was short lived as Assault added another 6 runs in the 7th to ice the game. The late rally featured another home run from Dave, who had 6 RBIs. Also chipping in on offense was Shane B. with 3 RBIs. In game 2, Assault slugged their way to a 12-2 mercy as Steve P. went 2-3 with a 3-run homer, Dennis G. went 3-3 with 3RBIs and Dave O. added two more hits. Trash picked up two victories over the Bums, winning 6-3 and 11-4, while Mayhem swept two from the Rebels by scores of 4-0 and 11-4. Rounding out the schedule, the Browns received two forfeit wins from the Veterans. Tuesday, April 29 Week 2 Highlights The brooms were out in week 2 as all six series ended in sweeps. The Cobras took two from Assault, winning the first game 4-1 behind the strong pitching of John A. and Ian B.’s HR and 3 RBIs. In game 2, the Cobras jumped out to an early 4-0 lead highlighted by Edwin S.’ HR, but Assault rallied to tie the score. The Cobras plated two runs in the top of the 7th to pull ahead, and then held on to win 6-5 as Assault stranded the go ahead runners on base. The Marlins had a very strong showing, taking two from the Veterans by mercy scores. Mayhem also took two to remain undefeated on the season, besting Trash 9-1 and 10-0. In the afternoon, Licey swept a pair from the Browns by scores of 10-4 and 5-2, while the Rebels picked up two hotly contested victories over the Bums. In defeat, Joe P. was 3-3, Dave N. was 3-4 and John F. had 2 RBI's, while Tim C. went 3-6 with two strong defensive plays at third base. Jim L. was a hard luck loser as well, pitching 7 strong innings in the 2-1 game two loss. In the final contest, the Brooklyn Bums forfeited two games to the Long Shots. Tuesday, April 22 Opening Day Highlights
The second time was a charm for Opening Day as the weather cooperated and the GHSBL kicked off its 21st season under sunny skies. In the morning session, the Cooper Electric Rebels and Licey made their GHSBL debuts, while the Cobras returned to the league after a one year absence. The Rebels had the most success of the three, taking two games from the Veterans. In game 1, the Rebels got off to a fast start, scoring 6 runs in the first inning highlighted by Chris G.’s grand slam. The Veterans chipped away at the lead and eventually narrowed the margin to 6-4, but the Rebels added a late insurance run to win the game 7-4 behind the pitching of Cheech. In the second game, the Veterans jumped out to a 2-0, but Al S. and Tony F. lead the offense to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory as Cheech earned his second win after taking over in relief. The Marlins extended a rude welcome to Licey by batting around in the first inning en route to a 10-0 mercy. Licey bounced back in the finale, however, and evened the score with a 3-1 victory. The Bums and Cobras also split a pair. In game 1, John F. and Gary L. provided the offense in support of Sonny, who not only held the Cobras to one run, but knocked in two of his own. Dom D. and Dave N. also helped out on defense by turning two double plays in the Bums’ 4-1 win. In the nightcap, the Cobra bats exploded for 13 runs in the first inning, with the first out not recorded until the 13th batter of the game. Ray R. kept the Bums off the scoreboard for three innings as the Cobras closed out the split with a 17-0 triumph. In the final morning match-up, Mayhem swept a pair from the defending champion Brooklyn Bums, winning by scores of 12-2 and 6-2. In game 1, Greg C. hit a grand slam and Howie went 4-4 to help Woody win his Mayhem debut. In the nightcap, Eric P. hit another grand slam, his second HR of the day, to help Mike I. earn the victory. Sweeps were on order in the afternoon, although both match-ups were hotly contested. The Browns and Trash engaged in a see-saw battle in game 1, with Trash rallying late to wrestle away an 8-7 victory. In the second game, Trash exploded for 6 runs in the 5th inning to break open a 1-1 tie and cruise to a 7-1 victory. Assault and the Long Shots also faced off in two close contests. In game 1, Pete W. drove in three runs, including a 2-run homerun, while Chun scored three times as Assault held off the Long Shots for a 6-4 victory. In game 2, the Long Shots jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but Dennis G., who went 2-3, tied the score in the 4th inning with a 3-run homer. Pete W. chipped in another two RBI as Assault earned the sweep with a 7-6 triumph. For the Long Shots, Jose S. made his pitching debut by striking out 6 while also hitting a solo homerun, Mike R. contributed with 3 RBI in game 2 and Steve G. went a combined 5-5 with 2 RBI in the doubleheader. |
