You Make the Call #5 Answer

Last week's answer: (a) Runner is out; 3B's actions were unintentional..

If a fielder purposely tries to block a runner’s vision on a tag play, an umpire can rule that he is guilty of obstruction. Once the defensive team attempts to make a play on the runner being obstructed, he is awarded the base toward which is running. If, however, the umpire deems the action unintentional, then obstruction is not called and the play proceeds with intervention.

Last week's answer: (c) Run scores if A touches home before B is putout.

According to ASA rules, the putout of a runner for failure to tag up is a time play (not a force play). When a time play occurs, all runs scored before the out was recorded are permitted to stand. When a force play occurs (e.g., a 6-4-3 double play with men on 1 and 3), no runs are permitted to score, regardless of when the lead runner crosses the plate.

You Make the Call #5
1) With a man on the third base, the batter lofts a deep fly ball. The 3B turns to watch the play and inadvertently blocks the runner’s vision of the catch, causing him to leave too soon before scoring. On appeal, the umpire should rule:
Runner is out;3B's actions were unintentional.
   Runner is safe;3B can’t block runner’s view.
Runner is out;he/coach must create line of vision.
Runner is safe;this is not an appealable play.

Last week's answer: (b) Action continues and the result of the play stands

A batter is only out when struck by a batted ball if: (1) the infraction occurs before all relevant fielders have had a chance to make a play on the ball; or (2) if the umpire deems that the runner intentionally made contact with the batted ball  In this example, the ball had passed the drawn-in infield, meaning that no fielders had a chance at field the ball. As a result, the ball is live and the results of the play stand.

You Make the Call #4
1) With men on 1st (B) and 3rd (A) and one out, the batter hits a fly ball to the outfield. The runner from 3rd tags and safely advances home, but the runner on 1st, who had gone halfway, is thrown out before he can return to the bag. The correct call is:
Run does not score in all circumstances.
   Run scores in all circumstances.
Run scores if A touches home before B is putout.
Run does not score unless umpire waves off force.

Last week's answer: (a) Batter goes to 2B; runner from 2B scores When an overthrow is made, all runners, including the batter, are awarded TWO bases from the RELEASE of the throw. No distinction is made based on whether the throw is from the outfield or the infield. The reason a throw from an infielder seemingly results in one base is because in most cases the batter has not yet reached first base before the throw is made. As a result, the two bases awarded are actually 1B and 2B.

You Make the Call #3
1) With second and third and one out, the defense decides to play in. The batter hits a ground ball between the drawn-in SS and 3B, but after passing both fielders, it then glances off the trail runner as he crosses from second to third. The correct call is:
Batter is out; all runners move up one base
Action continues and the result of the play stands
Batter is out; runners return to previous bases
Dead ball; batter awarded 1B, but runners return

Last week's answer: (e) The offense is allowed to pick choice 2 or 3.

When a batter makes contact with the catcher's glove BEFORE completing his swing, catcher's interference is called. Catcher's interference results in a delayed dead ball, which allows the offense to either keep the result of the play or opt to have the batter awarded first base. If the latter is chosen, a error is charged to the catcher and no runners are allowed to advance unless forced by the batter being awarded first base.

You Make the Call #2
1) With a man on second base, a batter hit hits a groundball to SS. In an attempt to retire the batter, the SS' throw goes into deadball territory. Assuming the runner never left 2B, where should the runners be placed?
Batter goes to 2B; runner from 2B scores
Batter stays at 1B; runner from 2B goes to 3B
Batter goes to 2B; runner from 2B goes to 3B
Batter goes to 3B; runner from 2B scores

You Make The Call
1) With men on first and second, a batter slaps an RBI single into left field. Before making contact with the ball, however, the batter also strikes the catcher’s glove. What is the correct call:
   The batter is out?
The batter is awarded first base?
The result of the play stands?
   The umpire declares no pitch?
The offense is allowed to pick choice 2 or 3?
