The Glassboro Orchid Club was organized in 1963 by Mrs. Gloria Russell along with other members of the Glassboro community. During her term as State President of the New Jersey State Federation of Colored Women’s Clubs, Mrs. Dorothy L. Bullock was instrumental in encouraging the group to join the state organization and later the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, Inc., the oldest African American Women’s Organization in the nation. Service to the community is based on a five-point program: Education, Employment, Health/Welfare, Housing, and Legislation. The Orchid Club has annually donated Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets to the needy and aided others in times of distress. Scholastic and Book Scholarships are presented annually to students of Glassboro and surrounding areas. The Club works diligently on Voter Registration and School Board Elections, hosts an annual Senior Citizen Christmas Party and plans various activities for the youth of Glassboro.
