THIS WEEK IN GBC

Junior A

The Junior A "Shock" went on the road to face undefeated Bethlehem in a prime time Saturday night battle. Right off the opening tip off, the "Shock" could see their opponent would be tough as Bethlehem continually broke the press and cut through the "Shocks" man to man defense. Guilderland was able to do the same against Bethlehem's defense so the lead changed hands multiple times during the early stages with GBC trailing 9-8. Then, the "Shock" changed to their patented pressure defense. Bethlehem had no answer for it and started to turn the ball over. The "Shock" got exceptional early efforts from ball hawk Shannon Mackesey (9 points, 6 assists, 8 steals), young gun Zibby Eckhardt (8 points, 9 rebounds) and bulldog Kylee Nicklas (4 points, 3 steals) as they went on a 15-5 run the rest of the half capped off by a three pointer by Mackesey to take a 23-14 lead into intermission.

The second half started off slowly as Bethlehem tried an assortment of different offenses to try and penetrate the "Shocks" defense as well as changing their defense to stop GBC's offense. Once the "Shock" was able to identify what Bethlehem was doing, they again took control of the game. Lead by young jaguar Sunshine Edwards (6 points), rising star Taylor Tewksbury (5 points, 2 rebounds), and young dynamo Emma Oliver (4 points, 2 assists), the "Shock" started to expand their lead. Bethlehem made one last run but key baskets down the stretch from young titan Danya Poskanzer (2 points, 5 rebounds) and young glider Rebecca Golderman (2 points, 2 assists) sealed the "Shocks" (2-1) second straight win, 40-26. The Junior A next play in the Turkey Trot holiday tournament.

Junior B

The Guilderland Junior B girls ran their record to 3-0 on Saturday night, with a tough, heart-pounding win away against rival Bethlehem.  The girls found themselves in an unfamiliar place at the half, down 5-2 and looking for answers against the tenacious zone that Bethlehem threw at them.   Fortunately for the Lady Dutch B’s, a tough opportunistic pressing defense kept the game close in the early going.  Once again the “Red” press caused turnovers and steal opportunities with Emily Burns leading the way with 11 steals and Courtney Kramer coming up with 5 of her own.    Eden Alin got the B’s on the board in the first half with a nice 10 foot jumper to keep things close. The pace was fast and furious in the second half with full court pressure creating opportunities for the Dutch.  Courtney Kramer added 4 points, Caitlin Corbett 3, Emily Burns 1 in the second half, but Julia Smith iced it making clutch foul shots down the stretch, ending up with 5 points of her own.  The girls also did a fantastic job on the boards, limiting Bethlehem to single shot opportunities most of the night.  Caitlin Corbett led the way on the boards with 11 rebounds, Emily Burns and Julia Smith each added 3, Eileen Seery & Desire Ogunyase each grabbed 2 while Talia Segal, Eden Alin, Cassidy Mongin, & Jillian Love all had 1.  Emily Burns had 2 of her steals in the last minute to make it impossible for Bethlehem to even the game.  The Dutch finished ahead 15-13. The Junior B’s pick up the regular season on December 5 at home vs Niskayuna and have a potential tournament appearance over the holiday weekend

Biddy A

The Biddy A “Storm” found itself in the hole early as Bethlehem jumped out to an 8-0 lead behind the scoring of Bethlehems strong forward.  After adjusting their defense to contain her, Guilderland fought its way back into the game behind the scoring of Krista Forbes (7 points) and Madison Harrigan (6 points).  With Lindsey Garrant (2 points) and Claire  Thompson playing and aggressive defense at the point and Michele Papandrea(2 points) dominating the boards Guilderland pulled close at the half 12-18.  The second half opened with Bethlehem going on another scoring spree.  Switching coverage’s, Megan Dunn, Liliya Warner (2 points) and Jill Robinson tried to get the Storm close. But despite have made 26 shots on goal and dominating the defensive boards, the Storm lost to Bethlehem 28-19.  The next face Menands in a non league contest prior to the their Thanksgiving tournament in Glenville.

Biddy B Coming off their first league win the Biddy B team was hoping to extend their winning streak.  With only 7 players available for the Bethlehem contest, they knew it would be a hard fought contest.  Bethlehem jumped out to an early lead. Despite the aggressive defense of Samantha Stuto. Michaela Mazzeo and Lizzie Hoffman the Lady Dutch went into the half down by 17. In the second half baskets by Emma Runko (6points) , Lydia Brosnan (2 Points) and Michele ( 2 points) and key steals by Kyra Palumbo brought the Lady Dutch crowd alive, but not enough to overcome the strong Bethlehem offense as the Biddy B team went down to defeat.

Third and Fourth Grade

The GBC 3rd and 4th graders returned to action playing yet another exciting contest, this time against the all 4th grade "Little Lady Eagles" of Bethlehem.  The Lady Eagles jumped out to an early lead but the determined and spirited "Little Lady Dutch" came back with a fury and 10 unanswered points from timely shooting by Westmere's Caitlyn Gagan (4 points), GES's Marissa Simeone (4 points) and Altamont 3rd. Grader Colette Cohen (4 points).  Despite smothering defensive play from Westmere's Jamie Golderman ( 1 assist, 3 steals), Caroline Murphy ( 1 assists, 2 steals) and Lynnwood 3rd. grader Maggie Robinson (2 steals,1 assist), the "Little Lady Dutch" could not match the fine Lady Eagle shooting in the 2nd. half of the game..  GES 3rd. grader, Nicole McGrath played aggressively on both ends ,creating 3 jump balls and grabbing 5 rebounds.  Nicole and Marissa handled "Post Duties" with much effort an once again held the opponents tallest player scoreless.  GES 4th grader,Emily Burns (2 points,3 assists,5 steals) and GES 4th grader, Rachel Mastrianni (3 points,2 steals, 4 rebounds) both contibuted fine all-around games. The ever improving and hard working GBC 3rd./4th. graders return to action next weekend with 2 games in the Glenville YMCA Thanksgiving Tournament.
