Game Reports and Media

Games are reported on www.gwdtoday.com and in Sunday’s Index Journal.

Please take the opportunity to read the game summary’s that we have provided to these two media outlets. Also, if you happen to see a representative from gwdtoday.com or Index Journal, take the opportunity to thank them for printing this information for the children that play for GALL.

We will provide this information to them each week so it is critically important that the Manager's 1) E-mail all game reports to me no later than Wednesday evening and 2) Complete the game summary portion of your game report in a condensed but thorough version.

Because of the deadline with the media, going forward, if I have not received a game report for games played through Wednesday evening, those teams will not be included in the media reports.

Managers, thank you in advance for your timeliness and accurate reporting and for everything you do!!

THE PURCHASE OF A NEW COMPOSITE METAL BAT FOR USE IN LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL

March 26, 2009 NOTICE TO PARENTS, PLAYERS AND LEAGUES:  IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING THE PURCHASE OF A NEW COMPOSITE METAL BAT FOR USE IN LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL (Major Division and below), BE SURE THAT THE BAT YOU ARE PURCHASING HAS THIS MARKING:  BPF 1.15 ON THE BARREL OR HANDLE OF THE BAT.  IF NOT, IT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED FOR PLAY IN LITTLE LEAGUE GAMES.

Little League officials are aware that there are bats for sale in stores, online or that may have already been purchased that are Little League approved, but do not have the required bat performance standard (BPF) markings.  In fact, some of the bats on the Little League approved bat list may not carry the required BPF 1.15 marking on the bat, depending on when they were manufactured and licensed. Currently manufacturers are conducting an inventory and re-testing of all approved bats.  The results of this study / retesting is to be finished by March 31, 2009.  We are building a list of certain bats that are approved, but do not have the BPF marking due to special circumstances.  For these bats, we are extending eligibility for play until December 31, 2009.  As we are made aware of bats that meet our criteria for this extension, we will add them to the list.  Please check this list regularly for updates.  HOWEVER, ONLY BATS WITH THE BPF 1.15 MARKING AND THE BATS ON THIS LIST WILL BE ALLOWED FOR PLAY IN 2009.

Bats with the special exception include the following:

Adidas Vanquish Blue design   (There is a newer model of this bat, also named the Vanquish and it has copper and black markings.  It contains the proper labeling and therefore is not subject to the one-year rule).

DeMarini  -   Black Coyote, Rogue, Distance, Rumble, Tengu, Mach 10, Patriot

Easton   -   LZ-810, LZ-800, Stealth Optiflex LST 1,

Louisville Slugger - YB31

NIKE -  Areo

7 & 8 Year Old League

The Greenwood-Abbeville Little League Board of Directors has decided that in the best interest of growing our league for the future, we need to try and field teams in a 7-8 year old age group. We feel that this is a good way to introduce our league to younger players by allowing them an opportunity to play with us, and hopefully stay with us.

We have discussed this in detail and we realize that it may be a challenge for us to accommodate, but we're committed to going forward if we have enough interested 7-8 year old players to register.

We want to thank those of you who have urged us to look at this, as we believe you are correct in your thinking that this is something our league needs.

Therefore, we intend to have the open registration period from January 1st until January 31st, 2009 and all interested persons should call Billy Allen at 910-1011 to register.

Please help us get this word out to those on your teams, as well those in the community.

2009 Bat Rules

Just in case you are like us, and considering purchasing a new bat for your little league-er, please be aware that starting in 2009 Little League will have a new rule about bats. It states on page 47 of the 2008 rule book:

  • Beginning with the 2009 season, non wood bats used in divisions of Little League (league age 12 years old and younger) shall be printed with a BPF (bat performance factor) of 1.15 or less.

This rule is put in place to help keep players more safe on the field. Please remember this if you are buying a bat that you expect your child to continue to use in the 2009 season.

Who and What is GALL?

GALL is Greenwood Abbeville Little League, and is a chartered member of Little League Incorporated. Our Majors division fields an All-Star team that competes in tournaments with a chance to eventually advance to Williamsport for the Little League World Series. In fact, for the last 2 years, our All-Star team has won the Region 6 tournament, and advanced to the State tournament. The 2007 All-Star team was one game away from going to Florida for the Southeast Tournament and possibly being featured on ESPN programming.

We are a competitive league. By this we mean that on each team, quantity of playing time is usually related to skill level instead of a uniform or equal quantity of playing time for each player. However, we do have rules in place that guarantee a minimum playing time for each player in each game. This is generally 2 innings per game. The final decision concerning how much playing time each player receives rests on the Manager’s shoulders and MUST be respected by each and every parent on that team. The Board of Directors very carefully considers its selection of Managers, and feels that the men or women who are chosen are people who not only have leadership skills and knowledge of baseball but are people who care about the well being and development of the children on their team. They are trusted to make decisions that reflect that care, while still trying to make his or her team as competitive as possible. Our league feels that this fosters a sense of motivation for all players. They see that if they practice hard and improve their skills, they are rewarded with more playing time.

GALL is an ALL VOLUNTEER league and a non-profit organization. We have no paid employees or paid workers. This means that we are different from Parks and Recreation type organizations when it comes to field maintenance, organization of events and games, and funding. Our league is financed by player fees ($80 for 2008), fundraisers and business sponsorships, NOT TAX DOLLARS. We absolutely rely on the work of the parents of the players to keep costs down and keep the league running. Opportunities to serve include the following: Board of Directors, Manager, Coach, Field Maintenance, help with fundraising events, and concessions. We will be happy to provide our budget to anyone interested.

So basically GALL is you and your young baseball player. This league will not exist without the cooperation and hard work of each participant or member.
