Fort Schuyler Post 1290 is an American Legion Baseball Team. We carry up to 18 roster players every year. Our players are typically 15-19 years of age, and are all required to play for their school teams.

The Oneida League is very competitive, and includes 14 teams that are all based in Oneida County. These 14 teams draw from an area with 17 high schools, and a population of 235,000 people. The league is in the 5th American Legion District of New York. Fort Schuyler Post has won two Oneida County Championships; in 1947 and 1952, and a District Championship in 2004.

Fort Schuyler recruits players from the greater Utica area, including students from Notre Dame, Proctor and New York Mills. Our base school is Notre Dame. Both Notre Dame and Proctor have outstanding programs and are consistently ranked in the state, with Notre Dame bringing home state titles in 2001 and 2005, and Proctor reaching the state finals as recently as 2001.

The name "Fort Schuyler" refers to the original name of the team's home city of Utica, New York. The area adjacent to the city was settled in 1773 on the site of Fort Schuyler, a military fort built in 1758 during the French and Indian War, and later destroyed by the British Army in 1776. The community surrounding the historic site was renamed Utica in 1798, after the ancient city of Utica in north Africa.

Utica is located on the New York State Thruway, 50 miles east of Syracuse and 90 miles west of Albany. The city itself is home to 3 teams; Fort Schuyler Post 1290, Adrean Post 625, and Utica Post 229.

The Utica/Rome area is long known for its quality baseball, and has harvested players such as Andy VanSlyke, Archi Cianfracco and Mark Lemke. Lemke attended Notre Dame, a school that is home to 8 current Fort players.

In recent years, Fort Schuyler has competed against teams from New York, New England and Canada. We are always looking for new opponents from the Northeast, and welcome the opportunity to compete in tournaments. If you would like to schedule a game during the 2006 season, please email us at coaches@fortbaseball.com or refer to the address and number to the left for contact information.
