FGSA completes Montour Creek Conservation Project for 2009
The Forest Grove Sportsmens Association with a grant from Reliant Energy and in cooperation with the Pa Fish and Boat Commision, Pa DEP, Allegheny County Conservation District, and BKG Industries, built 3 "multi log vane deflectors " and a 110' section of "muti log bank stabization wall" along Montour Creek during the week of June 26th and 27th. Representing the Pa F&BC during this project, and designed by the 2, were Mark Sausser, and Gary Smith. For the DEP Greg Hocesh was present both days, and for the Allegheny Conservation District Amy Myers was on board. Kenny Kisow and Jeremy Kapaldo of BKG Industries provided the track hoe and bobcat and their time, to dig and move the material around. Club help consisted of Denny Early Sr and Jr, Butch Owad, Joe Gruden, Ken Erb, Andy Groznik, Matt Weaver, Frank Manslow, Rodger Bickford, Jack Christin, Mickey Cegelski,Ed Owad, and John Stewart. All are club members and volunteered. The work consisted of building 3 "multi log vane deflectors" which were all pinned together with 4' long sections of rebar. Then a fabric was placed over the 25' long Larch Pine logs and finally they were backfilled with a couple of tones of giant limestone boulders. In addition to these 3 deflectors a 110' long "multi log bank stabilization wall" was constructed in the same manor. A total of 33 logs were used and 100 tons of boulders were placed in the structures. The work was hard and the sun was hot but everybody did a great job of making sure that this section of the project was completed on time. This is only a portion of the stream conservation projects that may be comming our way. Forest Grove Sportsmen are already making planes for the next phase that will be further downstream. The blueprints are drawn and we'er just waiting for permit to clear. I have pictures of the project in the photo section of the site if you want to check out how these structures were built. For the next phase which will be sometime next year we'll need volunteers again so I'll put something on the site letting everybody know when it will happen. If you want to get involved come on down and help. You don't have to be a Club member for these projects. All you trail people out there, these stream bank stabilization projects also benifit you by keeping the stream from washing the trail away, so don't be bashful when you see us out there come on down and get dirty. We will appreciate the help.
