Bit of Hockey Trivia:
The longest NHL game was on March 24, 1936.  It was between the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Maroons during a semifinal round of the Stanley Cup.  Since the game couldn't end in a tie, there were 6 overtimes (176 minutes) to finish the game.  Detroit won, 1-0.  The more recent game to near this record occured in 2000.  The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 with 5 overtimes (152 minutes).
