Filly Mourn for the Best Family
The Filly family was heartbroken to learn of the passing last week of Ms. Janice Arlene Stout-Bradley, who was killed in the Christmas day mudslide in Devore. She was Jamie Best's grandmother, Ron's mother-in-law. Our hearts and prayers go out to Jamie, Ron, Kari, and Tonya during this untimely and tragic loss.
The following is an excerpt from a CNN story covering this disaster:
"Stout-Bradley's granddaughters Kari Best, 16, and Jamie Best, 13, said she had been giving them updates on the flood by phone Thursday, and she told them she wasn't worried. Stout-Bradley was baking brownies about 15 minutes before the mudslide hit, Jamie Best said.
The girls said county officials told them their grandmother was standing on the front porch of her mobile home when a wave of water crashed into her, killing her instantly.
Residents returned to the KOA campground Saturday to try to salvage what was left of their trailers, now crumpled and covered in mud.
Thick mud reached to the bottoms of the windows of several buildings and was higher than a car on both sides of the road up the canyon. A side of the campground store was ripped away, and toys and clothing littered the campground.
Stout-Bradley had organized a Thanksgiving dinner to celebrate the return of the trailer park residents after the fall wildfires. She had managed the facility for 10 years and was constantly creating odd jobs and forgoing rent there for people in need, said Rebecca Richardson, 15.
Richardson said her family lost their home about six months ago and Stout-Bradley let them park their camper at the site and gave her father a job at her adjoining horse ranch.
"She didn't want to see us anywhere else. Anyone she could help, she would," Richardson said."

Fillys Earn 7th Place at ASA Western National Championships
The Norco Fillys 14U team ended the 2004 season by finishing 7th out of 52 teams in the ASA Western National Championship Tournament in Kingman, Arizona, during August 6th through the 8th. The Fillys faced 5 elimination games on Saturday and sent 5 teams home through the Kingman heat.
The tournament began on Friday with the Fillys dropping a meaningless game to the Americans from Arizona and then losing to the Oregon Panthers, 4-0, in the first game of double elimination. The Panther pitcher threw a masterful game at the Norco team, who could manage only one hit. The game was particularly devastating to the Fillys, who lost the heart and soul of their team, Samantha Powell, to a broken hand and concussion. Samantha, our catcher, playing 100mph as usual, ran towards the backstop to retrieve a wild pitch. Sam slipped and fell into the backstop hitting her head and hand on the concrete. We forced Samantha to leave the game, though she protested. The Fillys found out the extent of her injuries the next morning.
The Fillys decided to dedicate their performance to our downed companion, Samantha, and came out on fire Saturday at noon against the CA Chaos team. After Chaos jumped out to a 2-0 1st inning lead, Norco tied the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Kelsea Rainwater and an RBI single by Dalyn Varela. The Fillys took the lead for good in the 3rd inning with a leadoff home run by Lauren Holmes and a run-scoring single by Molly Duran. Final score: Fillys 7 Chaos 3…..winning pitcher: Courtney Wilhelms.
Norco took on the Rowdeez from Orange County in their next game. The Fillys scored 3 runs in the 1st inning on a double by Varela and a 2-run single by Duran. The Rowdeez narrowed the lead to 3-2 after one inning, but the Fillys added two more runs in the 2nd inning when Rainwater’s single scored Melissa Garcia and Varela’s single plated Heather Nelson. Wilhelms pitching shut down the Rowdeez completely thereafter. Final score: Fillys 5 Rowdeez 2.
The Fillys 3rd game of the day was one of the most exciting against annual nemesis San Diego Renegades. The Renegades jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning, which they held until the 5th , when Norco took a 2-1 lead on a single by Ashley Mabery, a sacrifice bunt by Garcia, single by Holmes, a single on a successful squeeze bunt by Nelson, and a run-scoring single by Rainwater. The Renegades tied the game in the 6th inning and forced the game into an International Tie Breaker (ITB) situation. San Diego scored 2 runs in the top of the 7th , but the Fillys never gave up. With Garcia leading off the inning at second base, Holmes followed with a bunt single and Nelson also singled on a bunt to load the bases. Rainwater tied the game with a single to left-center, leaving runners at 2B and 3B with no outs. Varela then smoked a double over the center fielders head to win the game. Final score Fillys 5 Renegades 4. Winning Pitcher: Rainwater.
Norco’s fourth game of the day, against an extremely tough Santee Heat team, was another nail-biter. Wilhelms held Heat scoreless until the 6th inning, when she finally ran out of gas (after pitching over 16 innings in the heat) and allowed two runs. The Fillys scored a run in the bottom of the 5th on Holmes bunt single, a single by Varela, and an RBI single by Duran. Norco tied the game in the bottom of the 6th inning on a walk to Sarah Ogle, a sacrifice bunt by Brianna Smith, a walk to Holmes and a wild pitch. The game went into ITB and Rainwater held the Heat scoreless in the top of the inning. The Fillys began the 7th with Rainwater on 2B. Varela single her to 3B and promptly stole 2B. After a failed squeeze attempt, Duran walloped a grounder to 2B, scoring Rainwater with winning run, 3-2. Winning pitcher: Rainwater In Samantha’s absence, Mabery caught 4 games in a row in the heat, her hand turning a shade of blue…a true Filly warrior.
The final game on Saturday began at around 10:45PM against an excellent OC Lionettes team. Norco took a 2-0 advantage in the 2nd inning on a single by Varela, sacrifice bunt by Duran, single by Wilhelms, a successful squeeze bunt by Mabery, and a run-scoring single by Amanda Paris. The Fillys scored 2 more runs in the 4th inning to pad their lead to 4-0 when Mabery’s double scored Varela and Duran. Smith came on to pitch after the 1st inning when Rainwater could find no more energy. Brianna pitched 3 badly needed innings for the team, holding the Lionette hitters to 3 runs. Rainwater came on to strike out the final OC hitter to preserve the win after time had expired. Winning pitcher: Smith
The Fillys arrived back at the hotel in Laughlin at about 12:45AM and showed up at the fields at 7:00AM to play the Sorcerors at 8:00AM. The Sorcerors lead 5-0 after two innings, but the Filly girls showed their heart yet again, scoring 3 runs in the 4th inning to narrow the gap to 5-3. Holmes singled, Nelson walked, Rainwater sacrificed, Varela doubled in two runs, and Wilhelms single in a run. The Sorcerers scored a run in the top of the 5th to take a 6-3 advantage. Paris singled in the bottom of the 5th, but was erased on a beautiful double play by the Sorcerer second baseman. Alas, the Fillys run to glory had ended.

To all the Filly players: I love you all and will miss coaching you wonderful young ladies. Some of you have been with me for over 3 years, some 2 years, ...some only a few weeks. You girls have made my life a joy, a worthwhile endeavor, and I am bursting with pride for the way you have played and the way you carry yourselves on and off the field. Thank you for allowing me into your lives, for trying to do what I have asked of you, for laughing at my stupid jokes, for your blood, sweat and tears, for your tireless efforts, for your heart.....for being Fillys.

Fillys Remember 9/11
The Fillys will remember the 9/11 heros, victims, and their families during the 2002/2003 season. To signify our respect and admiration of our fallen comrades, the Fillys will begin each game of this season with "Lets Roll" as their cheer, the words used by the passengers of United Flight 93 prior to taking control of their destiny back from their cowardly abductors. God Bless America

Fillys Have New Favorite Actor: Tyler Hoechlin
The Fillys girls have a new favorite actor, Tyler Hoechlin, from Norco. Tyler stars in the new Oscar-contender "Road to Perdition" with Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. Its a wonderful movie and Tyler is awesome as Hanks on-screen son who witnesses a murder. Tyler attended a 4th of July party at the Rainwaters (his older sister Carrie is Kelsea's older sister Nicole's best friend). Pictured below are Vickie (Team Coordinator), Tyler, Carrie, Nicole, and Tanner (Tyler & Carrie's brother).
Fillys Finish 5th at Vegas Pair A Dice Tournament
The Fillys played well in Las Vegas over the April 20th and 21st weekend, finishing 5th out of 17 teams entered in the Pair A Dice tournament. Norco finished 1-1-1 in pool play, tying Scorpio Rhonda 3-3, losing to USA Stars N Stripes 6-3 (Manager Rainwater being removed from the playing field by the umpire for arguing an intentional delaying tactic), and shutting out Desert Heat 7-0 behind the no-hit pitching of Alison Cote.
Cote continued her dominance in the 1st game of single elimination on Sunday, shutting out the Artesia Punishers 5-0 on one hit. The Fillys then mounted a memorable comeback in their next game vs. the Tucson Angels. Down 2-1 in the late innings, with starting 3B Vanessa Viloria on the bench with an ankle injury, Makayla Farin cooly strode to the plate and lined a 2-out, 2-run single to right field on a 2-2 count to give the team the victory. Norco ran into a hot Corona Angels team in the next round, losing to the Angels 5-0. The Fillys trailed 1-0 after 4 innings and had opportunities to tie the game or take the lead, but the Angels held off all the Norco attempts at a rally. The Corona Angels went on to finish in 2nd place for the tournament.
Other Filly Stars:
Bianca Lopez - .438 Batting Average
Dalyn Varela - .400 BA, 2 doubles and a triple

The Fillys left Las Vegas with the respect of some older teams that played us during the tournament. The girls found out what it takes to go deep into the winner's bracket of a tourney....teamwork.

Viva Las Vegas! Fillys Finish 2nd @ Pair A Dice Tournament
The Norco Fillys had a case of deja vu this past weekend in Las Vegas, finishing in 2nd place in the Annual Pair A Dice Tournament for the 2nd year in a row....this time as a younger 14 year old team. The Fillys pounded the ball all over the West Flamingo fields all weekend (stats and stars will be out before the end of the week). Congratulations to an excellent 3D team, who came back to defeat the Fillys in the tournament finale 8-5 on Sunday afternoon. The Fillys would also like to thank Sally Commerford and her staff on yet another beautifully run tournament in Las Vegas.

Fillys Finish 17th in SoCal State Tournament !
The Norco Fillys finished 17th in the State Tournament over Memorial Day weekend in Chino. The two Filly losses in the tourney came from a surprising G-Force Team (7th Place finisher) and an extremely tough SoCal Pride team (13th Place finisher). The G-Force pitcher was dominant in the Fillys first game on Saturday afternoon, allowing only 2 hits in the game. The Fillys second game was a nail biter against the Smashers, a young team from Valencia. The Smashers took an early 3-0 lead on the Fillys, but pitcher Courtney Wilhelms refused to give up, holding the Smashers scoreless for the remainder of regulation play...with some help from Dalyn Varela's glovework at second base. The Filly comeback started with an RBI single from Andascha Moore-Pryor and climaxed in the bottom of the 7th inning with a 2-out, 2-run double from Jazmin Culpepper. The game went to ITB, with Tiffany Mills picking up the pitching duties from Wilhelms. The Smashers pushed across the go-ahead run with a 2-out single that hit the 3B bag. The Fillys began the inning with Varela on 2B and the Smashers pitcher hit catcher Heather Nelson with a pitch. With 2 on and nobody out, Britnee Smith smashed a 2-2 pitch over the CF's head, scoring the tying and winning runs for the Norco squad.
The Fillys packed up and immediately moved to the next field to face the South Bay Panthers. The Panthers were no match for the Mills, who threw a complete game shutout.... a 2-hitter, no walks, and 3 Ks. Mills was helped out by the sterling defense of Wilhelms at SS, Sarah Ogle at 1B and Ashley Mabery in RF (who threw out 2 batters at 1B on ground balls to right field). Moore-Pryor provided the offense with a bases-loaded triple in the first inning. Mills had two hits, as did Kelsea Rainwater, Nelson (another triple), and Varela.
Norco had to face SoCal Pride in their next game. Pride has already qualified to participate in the Hall of Fame National Qualifier in Oklahoma City. The game progressed like a boxing title match, with both teams slugging away at the other. Pride's 2 runs came on a wild pitch and a throwing error on the same play, their aggressive baserunning paying dividends. The Fillys, with 8 hits in the game, threatened to score in almost every inning but were repelled each time by Pride's ironclad defense. Melissa Garcia lead off the top of the 7th inning with a single, in addition to playing excellent defense the entire tourney. Later in the 7th inning, the Fillys had the tying runs on base for Varela, who hit a line shot to a leaping Pride second baseman to end the game. Rainwater pitched a complete game 5-hitter against the tough Pride hitting attack.

Fillys Win Pride Classic Triple Crown Qualifier
The Norco Fillys produced a mix of good pitching, timely hitting, and defense in winning the Pride Classic, June 21st and 22nd in Rancho Cucamonga. After winning one game and losing two in pool play on a drizzly Saturday, the Fillys faced Dynasty (Szweb) in the first game of elimination. Norco held off Dynasty, slipping past into the Championship Final by a 4-2 tally.
The Championship game against OC Fury (SoCal State Tournament 5th Place Finishers) began with the professional announcer introducing all the players from both teams on the 3rd and 1st base lines. The Fillys had taken a 3-0 lead by the end of the 4th inning, fueled by a 2-run double by Jazmin Culpepper and a run-scoring single from Andascha Moore-Pryor. By the end of the 6th, Norco's lead had shrunk to 3-1. Fury attempted a 7th inning comeback , plating a run with 1 out in the inning on a double. The next OC hitter hit a fly to left field, which Melissa Garcia made a running one-handed stab for the 2nd out of the inning. With the tying run on 2nd base with 2 outs, the next Fury hitter smashed a line drive which deflected off of the pitcher to the shortstop, Courtney Wilhelms, who calmly picked the ball and threw the batter out at first. Kelsea Rainwater pitched a complete game 3-hitter for her 3rd win of the tournament.
The Fillys were lead by:
Heather Nelson--.600 BA, HR, 3 RBIs
Tiffany Mills -- .500 BA, Excellent defense at 1B
Dalyn Varela -- .455 BA, 2 Doubles, Tight defense at 2B
Ashley Mabery -- .714 BA, Jammed finger on awesome headfirst slide at home in elimination game against Dynasty

Fillys End 12U 2003 Season At Triple Crown World Series
The Norco Fillys participated in the Triple Crown World Series in Park City, Utah to complete their 12U competition for the 2003 season. The Fillys won 3 games, while dropping 4 after being placed in a pool with the 2nd and 4th place tournament finishers. The Fillys ended the tournament with only 9 available players due to injuries and other circumstances. The team leaders for the tournament were:
Andascha Moore-Pryor - .692 BA, 2 doubles, 7 RBI's, 7 RS
Courtney Wilhelms - .545 BA, 2 doubles, 10 RBI's, 2 pitching wins
Heather Nelson - .438 BA, triple, 3 SB
Jazmin Culpepper - .364 BA
Kelsea Rainwater - .333 BA
Britnee Smith - .312 BA, 5 RS
Sarah Ogle - 7 RBI, 1 Save
Melissa Garcia - 4 RS
Tiffany Mills - 3 SB
Ashley Mabery - 3 Sacrifices, including a perfect squeeze bunt
The Fillys played with great heart and never gave up. This was no better evidenced than in 1st inning of their second game in bracket play against the Delta Diamonds as they watched their teammate, Kelsea Rainwater, carted off the field to the hospital after being hit by a wicked line drive in the stomach. Norco was initially stunned, going on to allow 3 runs in the inning. The Fillys battled back all game long, eventually winning the game 9-4. When word came back, in the 3rd inning, that Kelsea was going to be OK....the Fillys breathed a sigh of relief went about the business of winning that game. This manager has never been more proud of a group of girls than I was during that game.

Fillys Win Dynasty Winter League Tournament
The Norco Fillys combined powerful hitting, speed, pitching, defense and aggressiveness in winning four double elimination games in a row this past weekend to take 1st place in the Dynasty Winter League Tournament. The Fillys outscored their opponents 41-6 to win their first tournament of the 2004 season. This was an excellent team effort, with every player contributing to the victories. Great job, ladies. Lets use what we learned in our games this coming weekend in the ASA Thanksgiving Tournament.

Fillys Mourn Passing of Greg Jansen and George Caple
This past fall has been a difficult one for Norco Softball. Two genuine originals passed on this season, Greg Jansen and George Caple. Both of these gentlemen were important to Norco Girls Softball in different ways. Greg was a father to two girls who played in the NGSL and Greg participated as a past League President/Board Member and coached in the league for years, even after both his own daughters had graduated to travel ball. He was an original coach with the Finlay Fillys, a team which eventually became the Norco Fillys Organization. Greg died of a heart attack on August 31st.
George was a past coach with a grandaughter, Rawnie, who still plays in the NGSL. Rawnie played for the NGSL 10U All Star Team in 1999, a team which I managed. That is when I first met George and his family. George was at nearly all of Rawnie's practices...in between driving back and forth to Hollywood for her auditions and acting jobs, her batting lessons with Marty Tyson, school projects, etc. George's doors were always open to Rawnie's teammates, friends, and the coaches. George was an outgoing, jovial, man who loved his football...and betting on the games. I won't soon forget him. He died after a battle with cancer in late October.
Doug Pittman of the NGSL has written about both of these fine men on his website, which is linked above. Check it out if you get a chance.

She Bangs! She Bangs!
The Norco Fillys prepared for the March 13-14 AFA Qualifier in Victorville by playing 4 games in the RT Diamondbacks friendly on March 7th. The Fillys defeated a young Fresno Force team 5-4, beat CA Fury from Temecula 11-2, dropped a decision to the Tustin Hurricanes, and squeaked past San Diego Thunder 6-2. Norco was lead by Kelsea Rainwater's amazing day at the plate....blasting 6...count em...6 home runs in the four games, including her first career grand slam in the game against Force. The Fillys pitching and defense was excellent (Courtney, Sarah, and Kelsea). Dalyn Varela blasted a home run and Melissa Garcia belted a triple to help the Filly cause. The Filly catchers shined on Sunday with Samantha Powell throwing out a runner stealing in the first game and picking off a runner in the last game, while Ashley Mabery snagged a foul popup next to the backstop and Heather Nelson nailed a Hurricane runner at the plate. Molly Duran contributed some crucial hits along with a sacrifice bunt. Amanda Paris played excellent defense in the OF and spanked a couple of hits on offense. The Fillys should be prepared for some stiff competition in Victorville.

Recover Soon, Sarah!
Lets all hope that Sarah recovers quickly from the cut she suffered on her chin last Sunday. Sarah's injury occured on a great hustle play, aggressively attempting to advance to second base on a ball that was missplayed by the catcher. She knew that we needed her in scoring position in a tight 1-0 ballgame and that her agressiveness could lead to the Fillys tying the game. Great Job Sarah! We all want to thank you for taking the chance and hope you are well enough to play this weekend. Awesome effort!
