Rick Pelletier Wins the 2009 Minnesota BASS Federation State Tournament

    September 14, 200

Grand Rapids, MN - On Saturday, September 5th 2009, approximately 150 anglers arrived in the Grand Rapids, MN area to practice and prepare for the Minnesota Bass Federation Nation Tournament of Champions (TOC) on Pokegama Lake and the upper most stretches of the Mississippi River. These 150 anglers have qualified from their local clubs from all over the state. 41 clubs sent teams and individual representatives to the Tournament of Champions (TOC). In addition to the TOC, an alternates’ tournament was held on Big Bass Lake on September 9th. The weigh-in was held out of Hidden Haven Resort on Big Bass Lake and the top 4 finishers advanced to the TOC.

Anglers come from all over the state for many reasons; foremost is the camaraderie of fellow anglers and secondly to qualify for the 2010 Bass Federation Northern Divisional. The top 12 anglers from the TOC will advance next year to fish against 7 other State Teams from Wisconsin, Indiana, South Dakota, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, and Ohio on Lake Michigan in late summer 2010. At stake there is a chance to fish in the Bass Federation Nation National Championship and become one step closer to a Bassmasters’ Classic berth.

The Wednesday's night banquet was held at the Sawmill Inn and raised approximately $4300 for local charities: Second Harvest Food Bank and the Grand Rapids 4-H club.

”The great thing about the Minnesota Federation Nation State Championship is that we get a chance to give back to the community. Our sponsors have really stepped up big for our raffle and the local charities.” says Tournament Director Peter Perovich. “We really appreciate the support we get from Skeeter Boats, MinnKota, Gemini Sports Marketing, and Lowrance.”

Events culminated with a two-day tournament on September 10th and 11th with weigh-ins hosted by Zorbaz on the Lake. Day one began with a 3-hour fog delay, but that didn't prevent Rick Pelletier from weighing in a 17-pound bag of smallmouth bass to lead the field. On day 2 Bob Perkins reeled in the big bag of the day, 19.55 pounds, to leap to 6th place overall. Rick Pelletier also held off Brent Haimes to claim first place with a culmulative weight of 34.62 pounds.

Mark Holm Wins Fat Belly Bassmasters Inaugural event on Rush lake

RUSH CITY, MN-- Mark Holm takes top honors at the Fat Belly Bassmasters inaugural event on Rush Lake. the day was extremely tough fishing Holm said, most of the anglers call it a day of junk fishing. Junk fishing or not Mark Holm had his sites set in the right places to take the win with a rare limit of 5 Bass.

In the spirit of learning and sharing info, attached is a map of the spots/areas we fished.  Quick summary of what was working/not working.

First off, Jeremy deserves all the credit for finding the fish. He found our two most productive spots prefishing.

Both spots were on East Rush and were similar in nature. The north end of the lake, the spot on the west part of the lake had shallow clear water that transitioned into medium weed growth before it turned into surface mats. That area also had lots of pan fish beds scattered in it.

We had caught a decent number of what I presumed were male fish (13-15 inchers) pre-fishing there the Saturday before, so it seemed like a good place to start the day to get some numbers in the box.

Jeremy was throwing spinner bait and I was throwing Cavitron white buzz bait. By the time we left the area Jeremy had 4 fish in the box and I had 3 in the well.

Then we headed to West Rush to fish some deeper stuff hoping to catch some bigger females. After combing three different weed lines slowly with jigs and worms, I had only managed to catch a couple of tiny keepers to fill out my limit, you know something is wrong when you spend that much time working what looks like great weed line structure and you don't stumble onto some good fish.

Jeremy and I ended up switching to frogs at the last area just to try the super shallow inside weed line junk, Jeremy had one blow up and I ended up hooking a 14" out of water that looked about a foot deep.

Then we went back to East Rush and hit the inside weed line on the west side about mid-way down the lake,  I switched to a 1/2 ounce white Booyah spinner bait with tandem willow leaf blades. I caught a 14 1/2 incher off a log and then a little farther down the weed line caught the 18". We saw two more keeper fish in the shallows, but they were spooky and wouldn't cooperate.

We ended the day back up in the north end of the lake where we started. Jeremy caught a short fish and had another bite, but time ran out.

So overall, the actively feeding fish were on the inside weed line and attacked fast moving baits (spinner baits, buzz baits). I don't know what that 18" was doing in there. I wish I could say I saw a bed and cast to it or something else to sound smart, but I can't.

It seemed most of the fish we caught would bite the lure in the first 2 or 3 seconds after you started reeling back in, we just fan cast the areas and picked up fish randomly.

I don't know where all the big females were hiding? I know there's a good population of 17-19" bass in that body of water...they were there last year! If they were deep they certainly weren't cooperating on Saturday.

I suppose they could be tucked into all those big mats of weeds where the Muskies can't chew on them, and get out of the high sun and stay safe.

    Mark Holm
