FAIRHOPE, Alabama -- Fairhope's municipal park will soon receive upgrades thanks to a $50,000 federal grant.

Gov. Robert Bentley announced today that a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, along with $50,000 in matching funds by the city, will be used to purchase new playground equipment, replace damaged fencing and add new bleachers and scoreboards for the ball fields.

“With a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities, local parks are a great way for Alabamians to enjoy the great outdoors close to home,” Bentley said in a news release. “These additions to the playground and the ball fields will make Fairhope Municipal Park even more enjoyable for residents.”

The new playground equipment will include designs for children with disabilities. Netting will be also be added to ball fields to protect spectators sitting behind home plate from foul balls.

The LWCF program was created in 1965 by Congress and assists states with the development and preservation of outdoor recreational facilities. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants.
