FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. When does registration for the Spring season begin?

A. Our league always begins registration in early January and has a goal of ending registration by the third week of February. Information related to the scheduled dates, times, location(s), and proposed registration fees will be posted to this website.

Q. When does the league begin accepting applications from volunteers who wish to be a manager, coach, or umpire?

A. Volunteer applications and background check consent forms may be turned in as soon as player registration begins. Little League is completely driven by volunteers, so parents will be asked to fill out a volunteer application as they register their child. Team managers and coaches are most often recruited from the ranks of parents whose children are registered to play in the league. It is vital that during each registration period there are enough adults interested in making certain the program not only functions, but is of benefit to all of the children who participate.

Q. Why are player registrations accepted into the month of March for some divisions and not others?

A. Each division has a maximum number of players that may be placed on a team's roster. As an example, the rosters for teams in the Minor League baseball division top out at thirteen players (per team). If seventy-three players of age for this division are registered by the cut-off date in the third week of February, there would be enough to field only five teams of thirteen players, with eight players remaining to be placed. We would then extend the cut-off date for this division until we receive five more registrations to field one additional team of thirteen players.

Q. Do league officials ever not accept a submitted registration?

A. Yes. The most common reason is due to team rosters being at their maximum level. Even in cases where all league age and residency requirements are met, there are occasions when requests to register come in too late and we are forced to turn away some prospective players.

Q. How can that particular situation be avoided?

A. Adjustments to the number of teams needed to accommodate all registration requests can be made, however, these type of adjustments may only be made when all registration forms are presented by the third week of February. Beyond that time, additional teams in any given division may not be added for the upcoming season. There are many administrative decisions related to team numbers that must be made by a certain date, so it is essential that a deadline is established and adhered to by the league's governing board.

Q. Why are tryout sessions conducted when all registered players are assigned to a team?

A. Tryouts are conducted in the weeks prior to the start of the Spring season only. Though referred to as tryouts, these sessions are simply an opportunity for the team managers and coaches to observe, and rate, each player's ability level in skills such as throwing, fielding, catching, running, and hitting. These assessments help ensure an equitable distribution of player ability at the time of player drafts.

Little League regulations state that all players (above machine pitch level) must attend at least fifty-percent of the league's tryout sessions held for the division in which the player has eligibility. A page will be displayed on this site throughout the registration period that outlines which candidates are required to attend a tryout.

Q. Does the league provide each player a full uniform?

A. Each player is issued a new team jersey and baseball hat or softball visor.

Players in the Tee Ball division may choose to wear shorts or baseball pants during their practices and games.  Players in all other divisions of play wear gray colored baseball / softball pants.  Players in all divisions utilizing player pitch should wear rubber cleats.  Metal cleats are permissable only in the Junior and Senior baseball divisions.

Q. Does the league provide a program in the Fall?

A. Yes. (except for Tee Ball) Registration for the Fall season begins in July, after the Little League all-star tournaments have ended. Notice regarding the dates, times, location(s), and requested fees for Fall registration will be posted to this site several weeks prior to its start.

Q. When do practices begin for the Spring season?

A. Managers for each team in the league will advise parents and players of all practice times and locations.  The Tee Ball and Machine Pitch divisions begin practices around the third week of March. All other divisions begin on or near March 15 (the fields at Sherando Park are not generally open for use until mid-March).

Parents of players, volunteers, and league members may routinely send in questions about league operations. A selection of questions and answers may be posted on this site for the benefit of others to read and understand.
