Julia Goldsworthy, Central Bucks South
It’s a rare treat when athletes like Julia Goldsworthy come along.
The C.B. South senior lettered four years in soccer and three in field hockey.
As a senior she was first team all-league in both sports and first team all-state as well.
It’s a good thing she graduates before SOL soccer moves to the fall or she might have had a tough decision.
“I got really lucky that it didn’t have to be my decision,” she said.
And if it had?
“I would have played soccer,” she said. “I have been playing soccer all my life.”
For three years, Goldsworthy anchored the Titan defense at sweeper, but with a bunch of midfielders graduating last year, she moved up to left midfield this season.
Coach Joe Bocklet anticipated the move last year when he had outside back Melanie Keer take some time at sweeper, which she also played for her FC Bucks team.
It was a brilliant move, as Keer took over in the back seamlessly, and Goldsworthy moved up to score 16 goals at midfield.
“She has great instincts and knows how to time runs and get into positions to get herself dangerous,” said Bocklet, “and she has the ability to finish the ball.”
Even at sweeper, Goldsworthy scored 13 goals in two years coming forward on direct kicks and corners.
“It was a good improvement this year to go up and play midfield,” she said.
The transition wasn’t difficult for Goldsworthy, who also played outside mid on FC Bucks. And she liked playing there better than in the back.
“It was pretty easy for me,” she said. “I get to play some defense too so I get to use my strengths there, but I also get to go up and score goals. Who doesn’t like that?”
Goldsworthy was also one of the team captains this year.
“She works hard and demands a lot of herself and her teammates,” said Bocklet. “She’s been one many great influences that have been a part of the team this year.”
Bocklet credited this year’s seniors for laying the foundation for the future.
“She’s one of the prominent members of that class,” he said.
As a leader, Goldsworthy not only led by example but was also a vocal influence.
“All three captains have a different style about them and how they interact with their teammates, but she never shied away from communicating with anybody on the field and tried to push people to be better,” said Bocklet. “That’s what you want.”
Next year, Goldsworthy will attend Virginia Tech. The Hokies play in the Atlantic Coast Conference, one of the toughest in women’s soccer with the likes of Duke, UNC and Wake Forest.
“I had offers from so many different schools locally and along the whole coast and then I went down and met the team and fell in love with the school,” she said.
Goldsworthy plans on majoring in civil and environmental engineering, which is a strong major at Va. Tech.
“I did my senior graduate project with an engineering company and I took AP environmental in school this year and it was probably the most interesting topic,” she said.
She was recruited as a left back, but she’s not sure she can break into the lineup as a freshman because there are only a few seniors graduating, none on defense.
“It really depends on pre-season and injuries,” she said. “It depends on how hard I work.”

Fab five included FC Bucks captain: Jr. Sarah Senoyuit (F);

The season: The Rams have Maryland signee Zickler in the net and two athletic players in the middle with Kunkle and Lyons. The problem last year was too many ties, and the offense needs to improve if Pennridge has hopes of going far.

Intelligencer Girls Soccer Preview: 5 Players, Teams and Games to Watch
Player to watch:

Julia Goldsworthy, Central Bucks South: A stalwart on defense, the senior helped the Titans only allow 13 goals and post 12 shutouts in 20 games. When needed, she can also score, as she had two goals when moved to forward. She has signed with Virginia Tech.

Team to watch:

Central Bucks South: The Titans will be looking to translate regular-season success into postseason wins this year after falling to CB West in the second round of districts last season. Defense is always a key in the playoffs, and having Virginia Tech signee Julia Goldsworthy back there will certainly help their chances of advancing.

Fusion Midfielder Megan Campbell makes headlines in New Jersey Star Ledger 11/08/08

N. Hunterdon relies on Walsh, Campbell, 1-0

Saturday, November 08, 2008
BY GREGG LERNER
For the Star-Ledger

Kelsie Walsh and Megan Campbell were not concerned about clearing the keeper with their penalty kicks. They were pre-occupied with clearing their minds.

Selected by teammates to be the final two shooters on North Hunterdon's list of five for a possible shootout, the two were slotted in those spots based on how well they handle pressure as much as how they would finish under it.

"You can't overthink it," Walsh said. "You have to relax and think of (the penalty kick) like you're passing the ball into a corner of the net."

Walsh and Campbell did exactly that. Each picked out a corner and placed a shot in it, paving the way to a shootout victory that earned North Hunterdon a 1-0 triumph over Bridgewater-Raritan in the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA/MAC Testing North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 tournament yesterday in Annandale.

North Hunterdon's victory hopes seemed rather bleak at the outset of the shootout, as Bridgewater keeper Amanda Wong sprawled to her right to save the first two tries. Carly Posella and Rachel Friedman sandwiched successful attempts around one from North Hunterdon's Jess Irwin to give Bridgewater (13-8-1) a 2-1 edge through the first three rounds. Walsh equalized with a right-footed shot into the mid-right side of the net and, following a Bridgewater misfire, Campbell gained the advantage with her shot into the lower-left corner. Bridgewater missed on its final try, leaving North Hunterdon with the 3-2 advantage.

"I didn't look at what side I was shooting to and just stared at the ball," Campbell said. "You don't want to give anything away in that spot."

...After a foul call deep in VJM territory, Gwynedd-Mercy junior Samantha Eddy lofted the ball from the left corner, curving it perfectly toward the far side of the net. Teammate Emily Irons got credit for the game's first goal, but admittedly, all she had to do was give the ball an insurance tap.

“That was definitely all Sam,” Irons, the Monarchs' junior captain, said with a smile. “That was awesome. That got us up and got us ready to go.”

It was all Gwynedd-Mercy after that.

On a scorching afternoon at Mount St. Joseph's Academy, the Gwynedd Mercy Academy Monarchs shut out the Magic 3-0 in a one-sided affair to earn their first win of the season.
Led by junior Emily Irons and sophomore Morgan Sheridan, the Monarchs made it look easy as they dominated both halves on route to the victory.

....Katie Lamsback gave the Monarchs some breathing room 11 minutes into the second half when she took an Emily Irons pass and beat the defender before lifting it over Barr, making the score 2-0.

Perfect gift for multi talented FC Bucks Fusion defender Julia Goldsworthy

By BILL KEEN
The Intelligencer

WARRINGTON — On a day when she was supposed to be receiving presents, birthday girl Julia Goldsworthy was instrumental in giving a huge gift to each of her Central Bucks South field hockey teammates.

Tuesday, the Titans' senior drew the unenviable task of marking Central Bucks West's scoring machine, Deanna DiCroce, when the Titans hosted the Bucks in a key Suburban One League Continental Conference showdown.

Some players might cringe at the assignment; DiCroce entered the game with 10 goals on the season. But Goldsworthy welcomed it, and when the game was over, she had pulled it off — DiCroce was scoreless.

Moreover, so was every other West player, and South, meanwhile, got to celebrate Goldsworthy's birthday as well as a 3-0 victory.

“I was told (Monday) that I was to stay on Deanna at all times, don't let her score,” said Goldsworthy while licking chocolate icing from a birthday cupcake off her fingers. “I was just making sure that she did not get one clean ball to her, and if she did get the ball, I was there, or (fellow defender) Maddy Harding was right behind me.”

Her post-game confidence notwithstanding, she was honest when asked if she thought it was possible to shut out West (5-2, 2-2 Continental).

“No, I didn't,” Goldsworthy said. “(They) have so many girls who are experienced and have so many goals (this season), I had no idea (we could do it). I never would have guessed it.”

The Titans (4-2, 4-1 SOL) got the only goal they would need with 20 minutes, 23 seconds remaining in the first half when Casey Haegele slid the ball to Kiera Kenney in front of the cage and Kenney slapped it home.

“That was also part of our strategy,” South coach Meg Hutchinson said. “We knew we had to take them out of the game early, we had to set the tone and dictate play. We could not ease our way into this game, we had to come out like gangbusters.”

West, meanwhile, found it difficult to generate any kind of momentum, managing only three shots in each half.

As the time ticked away, Bucks head coach Alison Stone was forced to gamble and send every player across midfield in an attempt to get the equalizer. Instead, it enabled South to get several fast breaks and ultimately add a pair of insurance goals, the first by Ally Bradley at 8:01 and the second by Gretchen Kempf with just over a minute to play.

“We had nothing to lose, so the last two goals didn't (hurt) because my defense was pushing up and it was all on the line,” Stone said. “It was a question of intensity, my team ... came out a little flat today and they never picked it up. So, we're working on it and it's going to be better next game (Thursday against Central Bucks East).”

Bucks' goalie Emily Summers was credited with eight saves, several of them when she slid to kick the ball away. She said while giving up the first goal hurt, she and her teammates expected to be able to tie it up quickly.

“It's tough giving up the first goal,” said Summers, a senior. “We expected to bounce right back because after (giving up) the first goal we usually come back twice as hard and that just didn't happen today.”

Fusion Capture Region 1 US Club Soccer Championship

The FC Bucks Fusion U16 girl’s soccer team earned an opportunity to represent their club at the 2008 US Club National Championships on July 27th in Virginia Beach.

The Fusion coached by Richard Brownell, won their three preliminary games to advance to the semi-finals.  The first game the Fusion took control early against Massachusetts Premier Academy ending the game with a 2-0 shutout.

In the first half, Julia Gomes started the scoring off an assist by Janine Valerio and in the second half, Madison Clemens sealed the win with an assist off of Tierney Carabba. Outstanding performances were turned in by Megan Campbell, Suzie Trezza and Ashley Feldman.  The Fusion dominated the second game against Washington Township, NJ. by a score of 5-0.  Finding the net with solo goals were Keriann McGettigan, Emily Irons and Carabba.  Irons also posted another goal from a long assisted ball from Gomes.  To seal the win, Sarah Senoyuit struck a wonderful ball from Clemens to continue the winning streak.

The third game was the toughest for the Fusion team as they faced Laurel Lightning, MD.  After 80 minutes of tough physical back and forth play, the game ended in a 0-0 tie.  Outstanding play was turned in by the defensive line of Julia Goldsworthy, Melanie Keer, Brittany MacDonald and Chelsea Czarnik.

The Fusion team moved on to face Toms River Hurricanes, NJ. in the Semi-Finals.  Once again the team pulled out another spectacular win by dominating their opponent by a score of 2-0. Irons scored first to put the Fusion on the board with an assist by Jessica Sarkisian.  The second goal came from a beautiful pass by Kaitlyn Schultz to Clemens who strategically placed the ball pass the goalie.

The finals placed the Fusion back up against the Laurel Lightning team who played them tough the day before.  Both teams battled up and down the field but it was Irons who capitalized off a corner kick by Schultz to clinch the game winning goal 1-0.

The Fusion posted 10 goals for the weekend and 0 against.  This is largely due to the amazing goaltending performances turned in by Nicole Ulrick throughout the weekend.

The Fusion team will now compete for the US Club National Title.

Fusion Wins Big at PDA Invitational Girls College Showcase Memorial Weekend 2008

Fusion shuts down opposition

By ANGELA MOUNTAIN
The Intelligencer

The FC Bucks Fusion U16 girls came to the 2008 PDA Invitational Premier Elite college showcase prepared to play, and they left with the proof of their determination — four shutouts, 14 goals in four games and the division championship.

The showcase, one of the top-ranked tournaments in the country and drawing more than 300 college coaches, pitted the Fusion against teams from Maryland, New Jersey and New York in the U16 Blue division. FC Bucks earned the maximum number of points possible.

The Fusion began the tournament with a 3-0 blanking of Oceanside Power (Md.) off goals from Madison Clemens, Tierney Carabba and Chelsea Czarnnik. Janine Valerio earned the assist on Carabba's goal, and junior defender Julia Goldsworthy, who has made a verbal commitment to play at Virginia Tech, assisted on Czarnik's score.

FC Bucks dominated the NJSA Fury (N.J.) in a 4-0 win. Valerio's hat trick led the scoring, including two goals off passes from Goldsworthy and another from Carabba's assist.

Sarah Senoyuit put the game out of reach off a nice pass from midfielder Susie Trezza. Outstanding performances were turned in by Julia Gomes, Kaitlyn Schultz and Brittany MacDonald.

On the second day of competition, the Fusion began with a 4-0 shutout of Academica (N.Y.), taking a quick lead when Kerriann McGettigan struck an amazing free kick from outside the 18-yard line.

Senoyuit added another point, scoring on a penalty kick. Once again, Carabba found Valerio in front of the net, and Emily Irons capped off the scoring.

In the title game, the Fusion faced Freestate Phoenix (Md.), coming through with a 3-0 win. Irons scored off an assist from defender Melanie Keer to put FC Bucks on the board just before halftime.

In the second half, McGettigan found the net once again, and Megan Campbell clinched the win with a fabulous penalty kick.

In goal for the Fusion, Nicole Ulrick proved to be one of the top goalies in the Premier league.

The FC Bucks Fusion girls U-16 soccer team went undefeated this past weekend at the Spring MAPS/MSSL College Showcase in Philadelphia.  An abundance of college coaches from around the tri-state area came to watch the games and to scout out prospective student-athletes.  The Fusion team had all eyes on them throughout the weekend when they began the tournament by knocking off the Ottawa South Force team from Canada by a score of 5-0.  The first goal came from a long crossed ball off the foot of Julia Goldsworthy to a rocket in the back of the net by Ashley Feldman.  Solo goals were also posted in the game by Emily Irons, Tierney Carraba, Kaitlyn Schultz and Janine Valerio.

The Fusion then took on a tough HBC Elite from New York and the result was a 0-0 tie.  Saturday the Fusion came out right where they began the day before dominating the Marlton Storm from New Jersey by a score of 6-2.
