A HEARTFELT GOODBYE TO OUR COACH AND OUR FRIEND
On the evening of October 13th, 2001, we lost our coach, our friend and our mentor, Drew Wirtz. While he fought hard and struggled to recover from a recent stroke, he lost the battle, Saturday night. Our prayers and our love go out to his wife and family. This is a tragic loss for all of us and brings us all great sadness. We must look to each other for the strength to help the girls through this sorrowful time.
The balance of our season will be dedicated to Coach Wirtz. The girls have suffered a great loss. We, as parents, couldn't be prouder, as we watch them come together, in Drew's memory, and play great soccer.
We will be dedicating a page, on the website, to Drew. Anyone with pictures, stories or anecdotes, that they would like to share/add to the page, should email them to me at soccermom1@prodigy.net. Thank you.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT COACH DREW...
This is a poem that was written with memories from each of the Vipers. It was read at his funeral to let his wife and family know how the girls felt about Coach Drew, what he taught them and simply how much they too will miss him. It is called,
"THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT COACH DREW"
The most important thing about Coach Drew is that he was an awesome soccer coach, he was always there for us, and he can never be replaced.
Coach Drew loved to laugh, was a friend to all, and always called me his favorite goalie. (We only had one goalie at the time!)
Coach Drew was a great coach because he never yelled at his players.
"Go hard or go home" was Coach Drew's favorite motto.
Coach Drew never told us how to do a move, he would always "show" us.
We will always remember the way Coach Drew would shield the ball by sticking his butt way out during our many scrimmages.
Coach Drew taught us that practice really does make you a good juggler.
Coach Drew was always there for us, and now we are there for him!
Coach Drew treated us like his second daughters and we felt special because of that.
Coach Drew was a caring man. I will never forget when he gave me a Mickey Mouse soccer player from Disney World because I was to sick to go on the trip.
Coach Drew was the only coach I've ever had who never raised his voice when he was coaching.
If it weren't for Coach Drew, I would not have had the chance to play soccer with this great group of girls. I'm going to miss him a lot.
Coach Drew believed in hard work, he loved teaching soccer, and he loved us.
I will never forget the many pep talks that Coach Drew gave us at half time that led us to victory.
We won many tournaments with him and I don't think things will ever be the same.
We will never forget when Coach Drew tried to get us to hit him in the butt with a shot to the far post!
Coach Drew was an awesome soccer coach who taught me to believe in myself, to never give up, and to always try my best.
Coach Drew was a leader, a teacher, and most of all a friend!
BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT COACH DREW IS THAT HE WAS AN AWESOME SOCCER COACH, HE WAS ALWAYS THERE FOR US, AND HE CAN NEVER BE REPLACED.
Thanks for everything, Coach Drew!
Love, the Vipers
Thoughts from Kirkwood and Reading
FC Bucks has always enjoyed a friendly rivalry with both the Kirkwood and Reading Berks Soccer teams. Coach Drew was friendly with both teams' coaches and the games were always played at the highest level of competition. Coaches, parents and players from both teams have expressed their sorrow over Drew's passing. It is times like these that bring the soccer community together. We would like to thank both teams for their heartfelt condolences.
Ted Elder, from the Kirkwood United U-11 team also shared some other memories of Drew...
"I remember how mad both Drew and I were at the Hampden Tournament 2001 and YMS Tournament 2001 when they put the best two teams in the same bracket. Vipers won YMS and we won Hampden, but both of us were playing a little out of spite to the tournament committees for trying to knock us out early.
Also, Drew only ever had one comment after our games and that was "Great game!" They were great games, and he meant his comment. Our teams battled as two of the top teams in the region and Drew had a great appreciation for good soccer. We'd often spend 15 to 20 minutes at each game talking soccer; unusual for opposing coaches! He loved a good competitive game that brought the highest level out of his girls. Our team has long admired yours for its intensity and skill."
DREW WIRTZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Drew will be missed by many. His time and devotion, to the youth of the community, gives a glimpse of the type of man he was; always willing to give of himself to others.
It is because of his commitment to our youth, that the Council Rock United Soccer Association (CRUSA) board, voted unanimously to change the name of the boys scholarship to the DREW WIRTZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. Next year, when the new high school is built, it will become a girls scholarship at Council Rock South.
CRUSA is also changing the Council Rock Beattie Memorial Tournament to the COUNCIL ROCK BEATTIE/WIRTZ MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT. We are hopeful that the tournament literature has not been printed so this change can take effect immediately and not have to wait a year
