Thinking Ahead... Tournaments

Although we have barely begun our season, it's important that we start thinking ahead in order to decide what extra tournament we want to participate in.  We will be participating in the Essex United Tournament, which will be June 27-28 this year, and the club will pay for us to attend one other tournament.

Here is information on the three tournaments I suggested at the team meeting in November that I am willing to take the team to.  Please think over the options and the dates.  There will be a message in the "Team Messages" section in the near future asking for your input on which we should attend.

 Rutland Tournament (May 23-24):

Pros: Rutland is the closest tournament, which allows for the lowest traveling fees (especially since we probably won't need a hotel).  This is an A and B level tournament, similar to the EUSC tournament.  The U-10 A/B team went last year and said it was a fun experience with fairly even competition.

Cons:  The vast majority of teams at Rutland will be from VT, and judging by those that participated last year, many of them will be teams we will see during the regular season or our home tournament.

Amherst Tournament (May 23-25)

Pros: Amherst would be my top choice.  They seem to be the most organized, and they offer two separate levels of play for more equal competition.  The girls will be able to represent VT and experience playing against teams from as far away as Rhode Island.  This tournament will challenge the girls in a positive way more than I think Rutland can. Also, being out of state and spending the weekend together on the field and in the hotel offers an amazing team bonding experience.  And for the moms.... lots of nearby shopping!

Cons:  More expensive traveling fees.  There is an uncertainty about whether or not we will be playing on Monday (playoff day).  If we do, we will need to check out of our hotel rooms and book new reservations, which is a small hassle. Also, I don't know anyone who has been to this tournament so I don't have any first hand feedback on it like I do for Rutland.

Maine Coastal Challenge (June 20-21)

Pros:  Many Essex United "A" teams go to this tournament and do very well.  I'm mostly offering this in case there are many families who are already planning on going to this tournament because of siblings on other EUSC teams.  It is also a better date for some families as Memorial Day weekend can be a busy time, and school will be done by this date.

Cons: It's still way to early to tell, but I'm not sure the competition level would be right for this team.  Although it is the experience that is most important, it's a long drive to Maine and I'm not sure what we would get out of it would be worth it.  But then again, if you're already going to be there, why not give it a shot?
