But millions of people also meet in the St. Louis/Southwestern illinois area for culture, for history and for some of the best Soccer Competition in the State.
Things To Do !!
Lets Start with the Gateway Arch, The Arch towers over the area and literally casts its shadow across the river to the front straightway and drag strip of the new Gateway International Raceway. The Arch its observatory and a museum of Western Expansion, is open everyday except Christmas.
There's the world renowned St. Louis zoo in Forest park, which is free to the public. Or the hands-on exhibits of the St. Louis Science Center nearby. The Missouri Botanical Gardens has exhibits year-round both in and out of doors.
Among the Major corporate players in St. Louis is Anheuser-Busch brewery, whose facility is open for tours almost daily. The Busch family also owns historic Grants Farm just outside St. Louis ,which contains exhibits and rare farm animals who inhabit the grounds.
For additional excitement there are many casino boats that dot the Missippi, including the Casion Queen whcih sails from East St. Louis ,just south of Gateway International Raceway. And the Alton Belle,18 miles north of Granite City.
Cahokia Indians Mounds State Park is just South of Granite City. Abraham Lincoln's final resting place is but a short drive away in Springfield Ill,the state capital.
For the kids, Six Flags over Missouri is just 45 minutes by interstate from Granite City.
Certainly the world comes to this area for the sports. The Baseball Cardinals always provide excitement in Busch Stadium downtown. The NFL's St. Louis Rams play in the new TWA Dome and the NHL's St. Louis Blues and St. Louis University's basketball Billikens and indoor soccer's St. Louis Ambush all call the glittering Kiel Center home.
But its on our side of the river that the areas newest attraction has risen with the arrival of Gatway International Raceway and the inagural "Triple Crown" season. For the first time in history, the major sanctioning bodies of motorsports in North America --NASCAR,CART and the NHRA --have all planned major events at one track in its first year of operation.
The greater St.Louis/Southwestern Illinois Area is an area with so much to see and do that it truly is one of Americas great destination stops. And Elks Youth Soccer is proud to be near the center of it all.
