6th GRADE TEAM SEASON OVERVIEW
Our 6th grade team will play lacrosse as part of the Greater Eastside Youth Lacrosse League (GELL). The team will be comprised of players that are current 6th grade students at Eastside Catholic School.
The team will
practice three times per week starting in mid-January and through
May. Practice times are outlined on the calendar tab of the website.
We will compete in at least 10 games on most Saturdays between March and May. We will also attend the Three Rivers Shootout Tournament in late April.
Our coaching philosophy has these key areas of focus:
1. Teach sound fundamental individual skills, emphasizing proper technique and utilization of both the right and left hands.
- Throwing and catching
- Scooping ground ball techniques
- Cradling (left / right / both hands / one hand)
- Dodging (bull / roll / face / split)
- Shooting (generating power / faking / on the run / off the dodge)
- Defense
- 100% effort, 100% of the time
2. Coach team play with the roles and responsibilities required to be an effective and cooperative teammate.3. Dedication to improvement: work ethic, practice, hustle, focus, attitude and leadership.
4. Teach game rules, equipment care, respect for opponents, coaches, teammates and referees, and safety on the lacrosse field.5. Make the experience fun and exciting so that players develop and maintain a lifelong love of the game.
GAME PLAYING TIME
At the 6th grade level we support fair playing time for all players during games. At a minimum, players will play at least one quarter of each game. This assumes that the player attends practice regularly, is dedicated to improving his skills, and displays good attitude, effort and respect during practices and team activities. It should be noted that some positions require more frequent substitutions. Midfielders are required to run the full length of the field and are substituted more regularly for rest. Goalies are in high demand and short supply! If we only have one goalie per team they will obviously play 100% of the time - might be a position new players want to consider!
