Reggie Emmanuel remembered

The baseball community has lost a great son, servant, sportsman, father, husband, and friend. Reggie was part of a team from VOB who played in the friendship series with Benoni which cemented his connection our local baseball community. I met Reggie at the 1992 Durban masters and formed a bond and friendship that I believe has lasted all these years, so the loss is acute.

When the then Eastern Transvaal masters decided to play in the Australian Masters games in 1993, we invited Reggie and Kenny Spannenburg to tour with us, and this was very special because this was the first tour sanctioned by SABU after unification, and the lifting of the sports embargo.

Reggie as the teams catcher and soul, he was also my room mate.  We spent many hours discussing the future of South African baseball and the dream of setting up of an official baseball masters organization. Our friendship grew at this time and we enjoyed the comradeship one has on a tour such as this. Reggie made a lasting impression on the Australians, and he was invited to attend a coaching programme with me, where we were introduced to their coaching methods, which led to us bringing the programme back home and SABU adopted, which is still in use today. He was naughty…….and on one occasion during a game created an incident in front of Australian television, when he and the professional Australian umpire conspired to create excitement by causing a pushing shoving scene that looked real, causing me almost heart failure and tons of laughter from them when I ran across to defuse the situation!

He was a great sportsman and we played many games together for VOB when I was in Cape Town visiting, and had the type of fun baseball engenders. As an honorary Eastern Transvaal master and Benoni Northerns player we shall miss him, and hopefully the masters community will not forget the contribution this big man made.
