Pop Warner: Mohawks win first-ever Jr. Pee Wee title

E.P. defeats Chariho in RISMA championship game

CRANSTON — For what is believed to be the first time in the noted history of the organization, an East Providence Mohawks team has won a championship at the Jr. Pee Wee Division level after the locals rallied dramatically to defeat the Chariho Cowboys, 19-13, in the Rhode Island-Southeastern Massachusetts Pop Warner Football League Super Bowl Saturday, Nov. 8, at Cranston Stadium.

The second of Jaxin Smith’s two touchdown runs proved the difference for the Mohawks, who finished their RISMA season with an unblemished 10-0 record. Smith’s tally, a two-yard rush, capped an East Providence response late in the fourth quarter after the Cowboys took the lead, 13-12, with about three minutes remaining in the contest.

“There was some doubt,” Mohawks head coach Kevin Dailey admitted about the final stages of the game. “But our kids dug deep on that final drive. They showed who the top team was. It was an unbelievable drive. The kids really wanted it.”

The Mohawks were the top seed in the playoffs while the Cowboys, whom E.P. defeated by a 12-0 count in their regular season meeting on Sept. 7, was the second seed.

“We saw them early, but they’re a much better team now than when we played them the first time,” Dailey said of the Cowboys.

East Providence was first on the scoreboard Saturday with Smith doing the honors. He capped the march with a four-yard rush in the opening period to give the Mohawks a 6-0 edge. Chariho answered before the half ended, knotting the score at six at the break.

The locals regained the advantage in third quarter when quarterback Trystan Casey snuck in from the one to put E.P. back on top, 12-6. Casey earlier connected with Cam Gianlorenzo, who also caught an extra-point pass from his QB, on a key fourth-down completion to keep the drive alive.

The Mohawks maintained their spread until the closing minutes of the contest when the Cowboys went in front for the first time with three minutes remaining. East Providence ground out a response as Casey ran outside and Smith inside as the locals drove for the eventual game-winning score.

“It was a tough game. Trystan and Jaxin played their butts off. All of the kids played great. It definitely was a team effort today,” said Dailey. “That last drive, the kids knew what they had to do, and they pulled it off.”

East Providence advances into the New England Pop Warner Regional Tournament, which begin next weekend. The Mohawks will play DANBURY TROJANS at Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport, CT on Sunday November 16th at 11:00 am.
