August 28 - 30, 2009 Farmington Sports Complex - Detroit Area Coach Mortons Program has been one of the originals with this annual event. In the 4th edition of this pre-season exhibition weekend, the boys will square up against 4 of the best of the CSHL Jr. A league. Truthfully the only real game of importance will against the Toledo Cherokees. What has become a heated rivalry, filled with great games during the first 3 yrs of this event. Coach Morton's team holds a 2-1 advantage. Last year (08-09), with only 13 skaters against a full Toledo squad of rookies and veterans, Toledo Head Coach Iain Duncan wasn't giving an inch as he dressed a full bench of 18 skaters. This former Mississauga resident has become obsessed with this annual game of pride. The boys played it smart, stayed away from the rough stuff and other crap and beat Toledo 5-4 to take an unofficial 2-1 lead in the series. Unfortunately, the other teams we were scheduled saw the same results and dressed their veterans against the boys. Ouch ! It was a great weekend as start ups go and the boys in attendance got off to a quick start to the season. This trip has become an annual event designed to elevate the teams approach and overall play quickly, to a higher level. See you next year Toledo.
Monday, August 3 Al Piper Memorial U-21 AAA Tournament
Host- Leaside Kings Ted Reeve / Scarborough Gardens Arena - Toronto
Having attended this event only once before, Coach Morton returns with a new bunch of recruits. Several of the leagues top teams have confirmed entry and it looks to be a great opportunity for the boys to get a close (early) look at the GTHL competition. Hot on the heals of the Motor City event, the team should have an upper leg in games played, however, you never know in an Early Bird. See you there. Mercyhurst College Showcase Tournament
October 22-25, 2009 Mercyhurst College Ice Center - Erie, Pa. Once again the boys attended a U.S. venue with 14 skaters onboard, but who would have imagined we would come home Consolation Champs. Beating Mass Maple Leafs in the Final was sweet for the boys as the Mass coach decided to dress all 9 20 yr olds against our boys. In the end the boys had a great weekend as they experienced Mercyhurst College during Homecoming Weekend. Between tournament games, the boys caught the Alumni Football Classic followed by an exhibition game between University of Guelph and the Nationally-ranked Mercyhurst womens NCAA D-I Varsity team. The boys had a great time and made a great impression on the Mercyhurst fans. The invite to attend for this season, which speaks volumes to the class shown by the boys. Mercyhurst is hoping this event will take off and attract many new teams from the entire U.S. The Toronto East Enders have cemented a spot for themselves for years to come. Gardner Cup Under 21 AAA Challenge
November 26 - 29, 2009 Herb Carnegie Centennial Arena - Toronto
After a great 6-5 win against the 1st place Humberview Huskies, the boys struggled for a 3-1 win against the Miss. North Stars and lost 4-2 to the weaker Welland Tigers. That forced the boys to sit and wait for the results of the Saturday morning games. Fortunately, for the boys, Welland lost and the team squeaked into the Quarter Finals. In the Quarters, against the Mississauga Hornets, the boys laid an egg and let a good lead slip away. Then followed it up with a complete collapse in the 3rd period as the Hornets beat them 6-3. A disappointing result for a team that is beginning to show signs of life. Hopefully the boys can use this as an experience for future games. This years event is expected to see more U.S. teams than seen in previous years.
December 18-21, 2009 Ice Mountain Arena - Flint, Michigan Going into this weekend event, the boys were excited about being invited to the CSHL/GLJHL's inaugral Showcase event. Being the only Canadian content, we did ourselves proud winning 2 and losing the other match late in overtime. The highlight of the entire weekend was the last game against the top ranked Chicago Huskies, who came into the weekend boasting a 27-1 reocrd in league play. With many scouts and recruiters moving around the rink for the last day of the event, there was a buzz in the rink for sure. The boys simply stuck to their game plan, stayed cool during the rough stuff and walked out with a convincing 7-3 thumping of the Huskies. Then I got a call on the way home to Toronto and was asked if we would return next year. No problem, that was an easy one to confirm. This year the Great Lakes league plan a 4-day 10 team event and its expected that as many as 40-50 recruiters from U.S. colleges will once again attend. Several Ti-Cat players had a few offers to mull over, a result possible simply from their strong performance during weekend event.
Paul Coffey Christmas International
December 27 - 30, 2009 Westwood Arena - Toronto
After a great showing at last seasons CSHL Super Showcase (Dec 19-21), there were a number concerns going right into last seasons event soon after. Firstly, a number of players unexpectedly were away for the holidays and we didn't know what was left in the tank after the Michigan Showcase. After finishing the round robin with a 2-1-1 record, the boys once again had to wait for the results of a later game (Thank You East Coast Eagles) to see if they made it to the Quarter Finals. In the Quarters, the boys spanked the highly regarded Richmond Hill Stars 6-1 and looked to face Mass Maple Leafs for the 4th time this season, in Semi-Final action. Having not lost to the Mass squad yet this season, the game went to overtime and that solved nothing. So it all came down to a shootout. Goalie Andrew Anastas stood on his head the entire game and was the sole reason we were in the shootout. Once again Andrew came through and it was off to the finals against the Atlanta Jr. Knights A team. With a small line up of 13 skaters, Atlanta didn't hesitate to dress 18 skaters against the boys. Well the boys played the best game of the year and as the game wound down the Atlanta team pressed and managed to tie late in the game. It was off to overtime once again. With less then a minute to go, with the faceoff in our zone, Atlanta scored a well screened shot to win and the Paul Coffey (7 games/4 days) experience was in the books. The boys had alot to be proud of, having played 11 games in a 12 day period over the Dec 19-30 period. Great job boys. This years event is looking to have a stronger field of teams and the Ti-Cats performance has several U.S. teams wanting to attend. See you after Christmas boys. |
