The East Chatham Chargers are now accepting coaching applications for Head Coaches and Assistants for the 2009 season. If you are interested in coaching football Flag/ Tackle Football or Cheerleading for ECC please download and complete an application located under Forms on the website. Mail your completed application to ECC or bring it by the practice field. All applications are reviewed by the ECC Board of Directors and considerations are first made on all applications submitted. **Please note that if you are applying for Head Coach and you have an idea of who you want your assistants to be (vice versa) please attach a memo to your application indicating who they are.

**NEW***2009 Requirements: All football coaches (including assistants) must be certified through the USA Football certification process. This is important so that we can ensure a uniform learning experience of basic fundamentals throughout our program. All certifications must be completed by the 1st day of practice. The certification will be completed online and coaches can access the site and register by visiting www.usafootball.com. All coaches will be eligible for a refund for basic enrollment provided that all criterias are met. Please contact Joe Atwater jatwater2@nc.rr.com with any questions.

Team Splits

East Chatham Youth Football Association will call for all teams to be split based on the following scenario:

5-6 Flag when the registration numbers for this age group reaches 20 participants.  All Tackle Age Groups (7-8,9-10,11-12, and 13-15) when the registration numbers for a particular age group reaches 35 participants. (The board reserves the right to review but will not be obligated to split teams once registration numbers are between 30-34).

The split criteria will consist of the following:.

5-6 Flag:

Returning players will stay together with the coach that they had the previous year.  After that, the coaches will pick via a rotating draft to even up the number of kids per team.

All Tackle Teams:

All kids will be evaluated during the conditioning days of practice.  The criteria will be based on football basics and fundamentals; running, passing, throwing, blocking, and tackling.  All of the coaches will be involved in the evaluation process.

Once the evaluations are completed, the coaches and assigned board members will get together to review the rankings. The top two-thirds of the kids will be split in half.  The top 1/3rd position players will be selected to form one team. The next 1/3rd position players will be grouped to form another ECC team. For example, you may have 10 running backs rated in the top third. A viable team will need lineman, linebackers, defensive backs etc. Thus a team would only draft the necessary running backs needed and then move to select the top player at another position. This will ensure both teams are balanced. The remaining third will be selected by alternating picks.

In the event of a split, the head coach will be assigned by the board and he/she will be able to pick 1 assistant coach before evaluations. The remaining coaches will be chosen after the teams have been picked according to which team their child is on. Through our split rules we want to continue the competitive spirit of our program while offering proper instruction to all levels of our participants. We understand that it is important for as many particpants of silmiliar skill sets to be grouped together to foster a better learning environment. This philosophy will allow for the development of old and new, skilled and less skilled participants based on Football knowledge without limiting playing time. This will also allow coaches to further challenge the more  tenured or skilled particpants while not rushing the development of the less tenured or skilled players.

Central Piedmont and ECC does have a "Must Play Rule" of a minimum of 4 plays and this will be at the descretion of the coaching staff and game situation. We do stress the need for playing time to our coaches, but we also stress the aspect of winning and competition. All participants earn playing time by their individual level of competition during practice.
