Not that my little buddy has forgot anything of course, and VERY well said, spoken like the champ that he is. There are alot of stories to tell about this closing of a great year for me. This could have been a weekend of fun or hell. What I mean by this is I personally was finished last week when we finished 4th at nationals. I was approached by Bill around weds or thursday down in Florida and I did not have the heart to tell him I was "OUT OF GAS" and needed a break. Retiring from HIGH SCHOOL COACHING and the Indiana earthquake 18u was not easy but planned and thought out for months by me.
You know finishing 4th at a national tourney in the class A division is not to shabby, and a HELL of a way to end a long coaching career. By deciding to go one more week I put my "last tourney finishing great" in jeopardy.
Hot,tired and worn out I walked onto a field that used to be a frog pond at one time as mine once was at nativity . That made gametime seem better for sure, just thinking back. I tryed to stay positive the whole weekend and totally understand the thought process of the younger players who did and did not show up trying to gain enough will and energy to play one more weekend against a 23-under card of players who ALL play at the D1,2 level...Some people did not contact us one way or the other to let us know if they were in or out. But this was a short planned event. I want to look at this in a different prespective, Before I tell everyone about the players Bill mentioned I want to thank all of my current players who came and participated with and against some of the greatest earthquake players of all time...Some of you were hurting, have only a couple of weeks before you go off and play college for the first time and I commend you for sticking it out one more week for yourselves and mainly for Bill and I. That will put you in the same class with these old time greats when your quake careers end.
I also hold a card here that makes this a great day. Jenny Mann, a 1996 earthquake starter who played in the first earthquake travel game in Ft Lauderdale Fla participated over the weekend without losing a step or any respect for this organization over these passing years. ALL THE players Bill mentioned hold a special place in EQ history and with Bob McFall. These players were again reflecting what they were all about-HARD WORKERS AND TEAM PLAYERS-These kids always listened to my message, not the way I said it. What meant something to me was seeing these people still having fun....3-1 in that last game prooved that , even after FASTPITCH is over for most of them.
The funny thing is about all this, The final teams playing had SEVERAL former and current EQ players, both umps had legnthy earthquake ties, former coach anosky and current parent sater along with being a FORMER parent with 2 kids participating in the program . Also all coaches participating in the last game had EQ ties by being current and former coaches-all this speaks highly of what Jenny Mann's travel team started 12 years ago, I had a chance to see some of my favorite players of all time play on the same field together...I am going to thank everyone in that final game who participated,Coaches,Umps and players from the this successful earthquake era.. This is why we keep on rolling! |

Former Quakes still have it…..
Anyone who didn’t get a chance to make a game over the weekend at Jeff Alsips
23U invitational at Central, missed a great opportunity to see how & why we play the game.
Actually the 23U was changed to 18 & up to accommodate one of our players.
All of us think about turning back the clock once in a while & these ladies did it
Over the weekend in their usual style finishing 2nd even though a lot of them have
Not played for a few years.
Jenny Mann UE 2004, Val Eberhard Nova SE Fl, Michelle Reitman UE, Sarah Hagerty
Purdue, Kam Current USI, Chelsea Sater USI, all former Quakers.
All these ladies, initially contacted within a few days of the tournament to possibly play; their first Response was OMG!!! Fastpitch!! When, Where? I’ll be there!!!!!
Except for Kam, the rest of these kids hadn’t swung a bat in competitive fastpitch
In 1-4 years. They didn’t really care, they just wanted to play one more time.
Chelsea came to the game Saturday with seams on her back from getting hit
Friday in a slow pitch game. In game 2, running in foul territory on 3rd base
She got hit in the thigh with a vicious line drive from Val who was always
Dangereous with 2 strikes.
Speaking of Val, she missed a Home run by inches in game 2. Even after
2 arm surgery’s she still plays short stop as good as anyone. She still has
unbelievable speed & instincts creating offensive situations on the field.
After being called out at 3rd on a questionable call right in front of me, she
Didn’t say a word, got up dusted herself off, smiled & trotted back to the dugout.
Val actually got spiked in the foot in game one Sunday & didn’t say a word until
We were done with game two, because she didn’t want to come out of the game.
It was only after we were done, that she took her sock off & found out the nail on
Her big toe was busted.
Michelle was so excited to get to play, she couldn’t hardly stand it. But Saturday
Morning she was “chucking” & sick all day. She came to the field Sunday after mass, changed her cloths & went right to work, playing 3rd in the 2nd inning just like she used to, putting down a nice bunt & actually scoring our only run.
Sarah had a great offensive weekend with several hits off some fine pitching, some
D1. While catching in the 2nd inning of game one, she took a foul tip off the index finger
Splitting it along the nail. A quick wipe on the blood & a band aid from the other team &
She’s ready to go making a great defensive play to nail a kid at the plate.
Kam was one of the few who didn’t get some sort of injury this weekend. She brought her injury with her with a “popping” shoulder from the weekend before. After some initial warm up in the first inning of game one, her ball movement continued to keep
Batters off stride throughout the tournament. If you have ever watched Kam, after a questionable
Call from the ump, she will turn her back to him talking to herself all the way past the
Rubber, then turn and smile at the ump, awsum!
Jenny was the only one of the group that I know of who didn’t have an injury. She
Did admit Sunday morning though, as did some of the others, that it was a little hard to get out of bed. Jenny, who
Played for UE, played great both in the infield & outfield. She put down 2 of the nicest
Bunts I’ve seen in a while. One right up the 1st base line, the other pushed right past the
Pitcher & 3rd baseman at the right speed where the SS couldn’t make a play. Now that is a clinic.
These ladies are a class act in whatever they do!
A big thanks to Jeff for giving these kids an opportunity to play one more time! |
