An Incredible Journey Comes To An End...

Dear Field Hockey Family!

We hope all is well, and you are enjoying the spring weather! This past week has been beautiful!

As Bill Norrie and I have done each spring, we meet to evaluate the winter field hockey program and plan our next session. This year, however, our data has showed:

  1. Significant decline in enrollment at the high school level
  2. A low retention of 8th grade players from the 2005 winter into the 2006 high school program
  3. An average attendance rate of just 62% on a given date for all participants of the program

These numbers and the decline of summer participants (as more players have looked to attend camp and their individual high school's captains practice) the past two years have helped us to make a very difficult decision. This seems to be an appropriate time to end the Equal Sports Participation Field Hockey Program. The projected participant numbers do not support the program's continuation. We will not be holding a summer program this year nor a winter program next year.

We make this decision with sadness that we will not have the same interaction with the young women, coaches and families we have gotten to know in the last seven years; however, we both know that we leave many young women with the ability to go out and create their own playing opportunities.

Our goal from day one has always been to expose players to additional playing opportunities, and those beyond high school...we feel we have achieved this. In part this has led to our lower numbers as we have a very small community in Greater Cleveland. We are not at all disappointed by this as we have watched many young girls blossom into incredible young women through this sport.

As we sat chatting last week about the program, one good memory after the next just kept popping to mind...whether it was one of our first players to one of our new participants this year. There were so many positive experiences and joys of having been a part of something so unique. Everyone that participated grew as a player/coach/umpire and more importantly to us as a person. This even included us. Whether it was learning to risk to make a mistake in order to grow, working with new people, learning how to speak-up or for some how to keep quiet, we hope that the experience you had within this program has given you something that will last a life time. It has been an incredible journey for both of us, one that we will both treasure for the rest of our lives. Thank you for helping to create such a unique program that will impact our lives and hopefully your families for years to come.

Best wishes in everything you do...as we are sure all of you will meet your goals! Dream big!

Kindest regards,
Heather Colbert-Eckert & Bill Norrie
