KENTWOOD -- Despite two conference titles in three years, the East Kentwood girls soccer team says it has plenty to prove. Not necessarily to other O-K Red schools, but to itself.
The Falcons are off to a good start with a 7-0-1 record (3-0 in the league). Their latest win came Friday, 5-0 against Hudsonville at Pat Patterson Field.
Sisters Becca and Natalie Means combined for four goals. Becca, a senior, scored three goals, and Natalie, one of six freshmen on the team, added another.
The fifth goal came from Casey McMillan.
"We're very motivated," East Kentwood coach John Conlon said. "I think the seniors are playing with a chip on their shoulder. We were third last year (in the conference) and we were as unlucky as a team can be. I really feel we have the ability to go far."
The Falcons led 2-0 at the half, with two of Becca Means' goals coming in the second half.
Hudsonville coach Mark Mulder, whose team dropped to 1-2 in the conference, said East Kentwood is solid.
"By far, they have one of their better teams," Mulder said. "The ability for one-two touches is a key for them."
While the Falcons have 11 freshmen and sophomores, Conlon likes his senior class, many of whom were key contributors to the two league titles. Brittany Dulyea, Kelly Dunbar, Abby Bosch and Kelly Schanhals are four-year lettermen.
"The attitude is exactly what we need," Conlon said. "They don't complain, they work hard and know what they have to do to be successful."
