History of the Blue Knight Invitational Soccer Tournament
Ebenezer Faith Christian School has participated in other schools’ soccer tournaments since 1990. In 1994, Ebenezer girls won a tournament elsewhere but were disappointed when they were not invited back in the following season. Girls’ soccer coach and athletic director, Bob Eble, set about to change that and plans were laid for Ebenezer to host their first tournament in October 1995. However, he was able to convince only 1 other school to join him in the venture. Not to be deterred, the Blue Knights worked hard for the next 12 months to get ready for the first tourney.
In October 1996, Ebenezer hosted its first annual Blue Knight Invitational Soccer Tournament. Joining Ebenezer that first year were Muhlenburg Christian Academy (Hunlock Creek), Sweet Valley Christian Academy, and Williamsport Christian School (boys). Matches were played at the Luzerne County Sports Complex in Forty Fort. Heavy rain washed out the second day of the tournament; final matches were held up to two weeks later (October 18, 25, 31).
The 1997 game site was moved to the Payne-Pettebone Field of Wyoming Seminary in Wyoming on October 17-18. Due to a last-minute withdrawal, the tournament format was round-robin. Bloomsburg Christian School entered their JV girls team, Mount Carmel Christian School (Mount Pleasant) entered their boys team, and Muhlenburg returned their girls and boys teams for the second year. The Lord provided beautiful fall weather to make the second tournament a success.
The schedule was juggled many times for the 1998 tournament. The playing site was moved back to the Luzerne County Sports Complex on October 16-17. Bloomsburg JV girls returned to defend their title. First-time inductees Memorial Baptist Christian School (Williamsport) and Canaan Christian Academy (Lake Ariel) joined them. Since the boys bracket had only 3 entrants, it was run in a round-robin fashion. Once again, the Lord provided bright, sunny, fall weather in the 60’s and 70’s for an enjoyable weekend of soccer.
October 22-23, 1999 saw the fourth tournament played at Community Park in Plymouth and the Luzerne County Sports Complex. Returning on a cold, fall weekend were Canaan Christian, Memorial Baptist, and Sweet Valley Christian. With a light rain for several games, Friday ended with a muddy challenge as darkness fell. For the first time, we offered 4 boys’ and 4 girls’ teams on the schedule.
The 2000 tournament on October 13-14 saw the absence of the Ebenezer boys’ team who did not field a team that season due to decreased enrollment in the high school. Bensalem Baptist School and Triboro Christian Academy (Old Forge) were newcomers to the boys’ bracket joining Memorial Baptist and Sweet Valley Christian. Triboro’s girls team joined the returning Ebenezer, Memorial, and Sweet Valley squads. The tournament was played in Community Park in Plymouth and Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke. The Lord blessed with sunny weather in the low 70’s for both days.
The 2001 field saw the return of Muhlenburg Christian after a 3-year hiatus and Memorial Baptist’s fourth consecutive tournament. Triboro Christian also returned in their quest for tournament honors. The 3-team boys’ bracket was a round-robin format. The October 19-20 event was split between Community Park (Plymouth) and Muhlenburg Christian Academy (Hunlock Creek). For the second year in a row, Ebenezer did not field a boys’ team. The Lord provided cool, but bright, sunny weather for the annual fall classic.
The 2002 tournament was known for some last minute switches before the October 18-19 event. While plans were laid for Friday matches in Plymouth and Saturday in Forty-Fort, a very rainy October, especially in the 72 hours prior to the tournament, the 2002 tournament venue was at the Forty Fort Pioneers Youth Soccer facility. Friday’s events went off with near 50 degree weather, but Saturday was played in a cold, wet, drizzle. The round-robin girls’ division featured Ebenezer, Memorial Baptist, and Muhlenburg Christian. With the dearth of boys’ teams, Memorial Baptist and Muhlenburg Christian played through a best-of-3 series.
