Durham Dolphins dropped off 356 seconds at Championships!

REDDING, Ca. (July 31st-August 2nd) – This year’s Durham Dolphin Championship Team had a remarkable finish to their summer season by competing against a pool of nearly 700 other swimmers and still managing take 6th place overall. The Championship team was a small one compared with many of the top finishing teams that attended, but they proved their strength with a third of the team placing top three in the running for high point. In the girls 13-14 age group, Lauren Tokunaga placed third overall, earning a new official "A" time in her 50 yard freestyle and taking off a combined 12 seconds off other events. In the boys 6 and under age group, Spencer Johnson placed second overall taking off time and placing in every event without disqualifications. Patrick Sonsteng placed second overall racing against a very competitive boys 15-18 age group. Sonsteng also took off a combined 24 seconds in his events. Heidi Johnson represented the dolphins well on the extremely fast year-round side of the pool taking a combined 23 seconds off her events, earning various new "AA" and "AAA" times, and placing second high point overall in the girls 9-10 age group. Johnson was also a strong member of Durham’s girls 9-10 200 yard freestyle and 200 yard medley relays with teammates Melissa Boles, Darian Leonard, and Rachel Marrs. Placing first high point overall in the girls 15-18 age group was Durham’s Michelle Wood, who bettered her time in every race she swam taking off an amazing combined 37 seconds. Wood was also apart of Durham’s well represented girls 15-18 200 yard freestyle and 200 yard medley relays along with teammates Samantha Jenkins, Emily Farrell, and Rachel Wood.

Various other great swims by the Dolphins took place throughout the weekend including Jenkins in the 500 yard freestyle who still managed to drop 10 seconds while battling a severely malfunctioning cap and goggles. Vanessa Gillette swam a great 100 yard breaststroke in the girls 15-18 age group taking off three seconds and finishing strong. Mary Freitas aged up to the girls 11-12 age group and swam back to back 100 and 200 yard individual medley events, still taking off five and seven seconds off each race. Jared Marrs was the only boy to represent the dolphins in the boys 11-12 age group and improved every race he swam taking off a combined 13 seconds off his events. Payton Leonard improved various personal records during the meet while battling knee problems. This included pushing through pain and still taking two seconds off her girls 11-12 50 yard breaststroke race.

Maddox Schweitzer swam his first North Valley Aquatic League Swimming Championship ever and represented the Dolphins well in the boys 6 and under age group as well as keeping everyone positive with his cheering on teammates and positive attitude. Rachel Wood and Emily Farrell were part of the largest age group represented from Durham, the girls 15-18 age bracket. Wood had exceptional swims in 200 and 500 yard freestyle, as well as the 100 yard breaststroke taking off a combined 11 seconds from her races. Farrell swam strong in both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, and the 100 yard butterfly taking a combined seven seconds off these races. Rachel Marrs, Darian Leonard, and Melissa Boles were the Dolphin’s dominant seasonal girls 9-10 age group swimmers, as well as Durham’s relay swimmers for both the 200 yard freestyle and 200 yard medley events. The 200 yard medley was an exciting race to watch with Boles starting the girls out with a strong backstroke, Marrs proving her prowess in underwater pullouts off the wall in her breaststroke, Heidi Johnson surpassing all the other teams in her fast pace butterfly, and Leonard to bring it home in the freestyle swimming four seconds faster than her best 50 yard freestyle time.

Congratulations to the Durham Dolphins Championship Team for working hard, shaving and tapering, staying focused, taking a combined 356 seconds off races, and showing some of the big dogs how to get up and race.

Quotes from Coaches, given in the Championship Packets:

0.01  It takes longer to blink. It takes longer to sneeze. It takes longer to grab your burning hand from a stove. But 0.01 is shorter than the time it takes to win or lose a race.

                       Swimmers, take your mark..............GO!!!!

Strong start. fast off the block.

                                       STEAMLINE!!!!!

No breathing on your 1st stroke.

                                              Fast turn.

                               Quick off the wall(don't look!)

No breathing from the flags to the wall.

                                         FINISH STRONG.

When you are behind, don't give up: when you are ahead, don't let up!

            GOOOOOOODURAHAMMMMMMM!

Three Cheers for the Durham Dolphins!!!

What a great weekend of swimming!

Congratulations to Lauren Tokunaga on her Junior Olympic swim, Lauren placed right is the middle of her age bracket in the 50 yard freestyle, completing against year round swimmers! Great job Lauren and Coach Cari.

What about the small but mighty pod of dolphins that swam in Quincy. Under our coaching staff of Coach Cari and Coach LeeAnn as a team we placed third overall, what a great feeling when the awards were being handed out and our team was referred as "our great friends down the hill, Durham Dolphins!"

A Big Congratulations to our "4" high point winners: Abigail Larrabee, Spencer Johnson, Heidi Johnson and Michelle Wood, we are proud of you! Many more of our swimmer set new best times too! Hey, what about our team members showing off their talents too, jump roping to comedy acts, and with Coach LeeAnn being our "MC", what a fun time. Also thanks to our cooks Wayne and Bill for the great sausage appetizers  and the other team members for bringing "yummy" treats too, before the "show". Thanks to all the families that filled the timing chairs too. Overall it was a great time of swimming in the mountains!
