DOWNRIVER WRESTLING CLUB
The Downriver Wrestling Club is a non-profit youth wrestling organization that enriches the lives of children between the ages of 4 and 14 by teaching the fundamentals of wrestling and building confidence and team spirit. We invite wrestlers (boys or girls) from any Metro Detroit Community, primarily in the Downriver Area, to participate in our program - this gives our kids the chance to make friends from neighboring cities that otherwise they may have never met.

The Downriver Wrestling Club has been active since 2004. We belong to the Michigan Youth Wrestling Association (MYWA) which gives our kids the opportunity to wrestle in tournaments across the state from January through April.

The club roster consists of approximately 90 wrestlers per season.

EXECUTIVE BOARD 2008-2009

President - Amanda Santiago
Vice President - Lori Balogh
Treasurer - Margaret Noe
Secretary - Tricia Carson
Head Coach - Dave Ely

COACHING STAFF

All of our coaches are volunteers. Coaching opportunities are available to all parents. Coaching does not require prior wrestling experience, but rather an understanding of the dedication, determination and discipline required to advance in the sport.

Practices and tournaments are made possible by the efforts of our coaching staff including Head Coach Dave Ely, Assistant Coach Ian Santiago, and Assistant Coach Adam Ritchie. We also have a tremendous amount of support from our parent coaches.

PRACTICE

Practice begins in mid-November and ends in mid-April (exact dates are determined per season, based on availability of practice facility). Practices are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and are split up into three practice groups determined by age.

TOURNAMENTS

Wrestler participation in weekend tournaments is strictly voluntary, but encouraged for development. Members will be notified weekly of the tournaments that will be attended as a team with coaching staff provided. Transportation to tournaments is not provided by the club and each tournament has a registration fee that members are responsible for paying individually.

HOME TOURNAMENT

Each year, the Downriver Wrestling Club hosts a MYWA wrestling tournament. Parent participation in this tournament is mandatory. The tournament is held on either a Saturday or Sunday (date to be determined by MYWA). Set up for the tournament is done the evening prior to the tournament and therefore requires access to the facility. When hosting a tournament, the facility is utilized between approximately 7am and 5pm on the day of the tournament. Supplemental janitorial staff is typically provided by the facility, although all set up and break down is ultimately the responsibility of the club.
