Changing of the Guard For Little League Canada

At the Annual General Meeting held in conjunction with the Little League Canadian Regional tournament in Regina, the elections marked a new era for Little League in Canada. Joe Shea, the first and only president of Little League Canada, has stepped down from that position.

The elections held in Regina brought forth a new set of Officers:

Roy Bergerman, District Administrator of District 3 BC will assume the role of President in November. Roy has been the Canadian member of the International Board of Directors, District Administrator for District 3 BC for 12 years, president of Kennedy Surrey Little League the six years previous to that, and treasurer for Little League Canada. He is also a member of the Baseball BC Board of Directors.

The Vice President elect is Kevin Kvame, of Lethbridge, Alberta. Kevin coached for 12 years, and was an Assistant District Administrator and league President with Fort McLeon Little League prior to becoming the District Administrator for the Lethbridge area 12 years ago. He has previously served as Western VP for Little League Canada, and with 24 years in the program, and a leader in the baseball community in Alberta, Kevin brings a wealth of experience to the position.

Eastern Vice President is again Doug Mackenzie of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, a DA for NS District 1, the present Canadian representative to the International Board of Directors, and a strong advocate for Little League in the Atlantic region of Canada.

Western Vice President is Wayne Hobson of District 5 North Vancouver, BC. Wayne coached for 12 years, and served as an Assistant District Administrator while with Lynn Valley Little League. As District Administrator for the North Shore for the past six years, Wayne has been a leading force in the Little League program throughout BC.

Treasurer elect is Bruce Campbell, of Ottawa, who has been the president of East Nepean Little League for 15 years. Bruce also serves as the treasurer for District 2 Ottawa. Bruce has been a driving force for all programs within Little League in the National Capital area, and is a strong advocate for the Challenger program in that city.

The officers-elect all have one common sentiment to express: They owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Joe Shea, of Canmore, Alberta, who's impact and influence on Little League is virtually immeasurable. They all will "strive to win, and will always do their best" to carry the Little League program in this country to new heights.

Joe Shea has been president of Little League in Canada since it's infancy, when it moved from a few leagues sprouting up in the 1950's, to the Federal Charter in 1972 and he was instrumental in developing Canada into the first region outside of the United States. Joe first coached Little League in State College, Pennsylvania after graduating with a degree in Petroleum Engineering in the late 1950's. He soon moved to the Alberta oilfields, and coached in Foothills Little League in Calgary for 8 years starting in 1964. While serving as the District Administrator for Calgary in the early 1970's, be was a founding director of Little League Canada, and he helped initiate the first Junior division (13 year old players) in Canada. He was a director on the International Board of Directors in Williamsport, Pa. from 1975 to 2006 while also serving as President of Little League Canada.

The Canadian Region is unique in the Little League baseball family, administratively independent of the United States and other international regions, but adhering to the rules, regulations and philosophy of Little League worldwide.

Joe also presided over the first Little League Congress to ever be held outside the United States, when Ottawa hosted the event in 2001. In his fifty years in Little League, he has held virtually every position of note within the organization. Joe will continue his affiliation with Little League in this country as a member of the Little League Foundation, and will retain the appointment of Regional Director for Canada.
