Local umpire selected for Big League World Series

This summer, Little League's Big League Baseball World Series will have a White Rock umpire.

Jim Train was selected along with 11 other umpires for the international tournament in Easley, S.C., and is the

only one not to hail from the U.S.

"I'm just excited to umpire and excited to get the chance to represent Canada at the World Series," he said. "That's

what all umpires aspire to do."

With eight years experience under his belt, Train is currently umpire-in-chief for White Rock South Surrey

Baseball Association.

He officiates locally, as well as for the B.C. Premier Baseball League, and the games he rules over are played by

a range of ages, from 12-year-olds to college students.

Train's honour comes after White Rock-South Surrey Baseball's 12-year-olds made headlines two years in a row

when they represented Canada at the Little League World Series in 2007 and 2008.

Before being chosen for the World Series position, Train's application went through the local district

administrator and the provincial, national and international Little League organizations.

According to a Little League International release, the appointment is the highest honour Little League baseball

can bestow on an umpire.

"Selection as an umpire at any of Little League's eight World Series means that person has reached the highest

level of proficiency and by virtue of their selection is considered among the best in the world," it states.

Train started his run as an umpire as his sons stopped theirs as players.

"My boys played baseball, so I used to go watch them, and after they stopped playing, I missed the game and I

decided that I would like to umpire," he said, noting his first experience in the role came even earlier. "I was out

watching a game with my boys playing, and they didn't have an umpire, so I volunteered to umpire the game and

I liked it.

"It's being part of the game."

That involvement is worth the difficulties that come with the job, he said, such as angry parents and coaches who

disagree with calls.

"You put up with an awful lot of abuse but, overall, it's all about the kids and the game, and that's what I enjoy."

This summer will be Train's first experience umpiring in a World Series. Although he's nervous, it's not because

of the high skill-level players he will be facing.

"I do college, so college ball is a good level of ball, and so is the premier league, but it's nervousness to the point

where it's on such a big stage."

One Canadian team will play in the series July 28 to Aug. 4, and a number of B.C. squads will vie for the spot,

including the Whalley Chiefs.

Tuesday, August 10
COQUITLAM WINS JR. CANADIANS AGAIN!!

FINAL ~ The JLCC final went as scheduled at 11am MT today. It was hot and humid, and the mosquitos were out early as the boys got to the park for an 8:30am warm-up. Being in the Championship final had the players buzzing and the coaching staff on edge, and it took everything we had to win. But win we did!!! It took 8 innings, but Coquitlam pulled off the victory and have been crowned Junior Canadian Champs for the 3rd year in a row!!!

Brandon Becking got the start, and was throwing gas, peas, smoke, and everything in between. Over 4 2/3 Becking threw 95 pitches, for 6 K's 3 BB and 5 runs (only 3 earned) and had to be taken out while the A's were behind 5-4. He handed the ball over to Austin MacDonald who pitched 3 1/3 also with 6 K's and 1 earned run. The 1-2 combo was DECENT JIMMY, and all Coquitlam's pitching staff needed was run support.

Being the strongest, best hitting team in the tournament, the A's have grown accustomed to putting large numbers on the board. Today wasn't the case as we struggled to get runners on, and when we did, we had trouble on the basepaths. Changing gears and playing some small-ball and becoming VERY selective at the plate paid off in the end as Coquitlam loaded the bases in the 8th with 1 out. With a victory in the crosshairs, Cole Dowing pulled the trigger on a 3-1 count and drove a single back up the middle for the winning run! Winning 7-6 in walk-off fashion the Coquitlam A's are headed BACK to Taylor! Thats a 3-peat!!!! Boxscore

BIG props to Alex Romanowski for his outfield assist on a play at the plate in the 2nd inning. The 9-2 double play ended the inning and gave BC a big boost. At the plate, Romo has taken a beating all tournament. He lead all batters with 7 HP's, and in the finals he finally got one that hurt. Kudos for sucking it up and going back in to hit in the 7th.
