White Rock South Surrey Junior Champs Overcome a Marathon Trek
The White Rock South Surrey BC Junior Little League champions were prepared for the long flight and travel schedule to reach the Canadian Championship tournament in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. What they didn't expect was the marathon that ensued.

The team departed Vancouver on Tuesday, August 2, flying to Halifax with one stop in Toronto. The team had an uneventful flight into Toronto, however while there, the Air France near-disaster occurred, throwing the airport into massive turmoil. Flight delays occurred across the board, although the team was eventually able to depart for the last leg of their flight to Halifax. Due to the delay of so many flights, many of the teams travelling to Halifax were caught in the same dilemma.

After arriving many hours late, the team faced a 4 hour bus ride to Glace Bay, arriving at 4 am in the morning. While that is only midnight PDT, it still made for a long day for the teams.

Tournament organizers rose to the occasion, ensuring that once arrived, the teams were given extra time to rest, and get set for the start of the tournament.

Elimination Rounds Highlight Play at Centennial Park 9/10 Provincial Tournament
With the start of day three of the provincial 9/10 tournament, four teams faced the fact that it was win, or be eliminated.

In game 5, played at 3 pm. Jericho Little League struck with their bats, and cruised to a 9-2 victory over South Vancouver, their rivals from East Vancouver. As a result, Jericho had to wait to see who they would play after the nightcap.

In the evening match up, Lynn Valley held a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but despite only one hit out of the infield, Sidney North Saanich manufactured two runs to take the game and survive to play another day. They will face Jericho on Wednesday, July 20th at 6 pm.

Tomorrow's contest sees Whalley and White Rock South Surrey Little Leagues face each other in the winner's bracket. Both teams are very familiar with each other's strengths and weaknesses, and it should make for a good match.

Whalley Wows 'Em at Canadian Championship
Whalley Major Allstars overcame a round robin defeat against High Park (Toronto) and defeated the same squad 6-1 to claim the Canadian Little League Championship at Timmins Ontario on Saturday. Our boys will now represent us, and Canada, at the World Series in Williamsport.

High Park and Whalley were very evenly matched teams, and it was the clear consensus of all the local pundits that they were the teams to beat. They didn't disappoint, and ended up 1-2 in the round robin after High Park handed Whalley their only defeat on the tournament trail, 4-1.

As we know, District 3 teams will always take up the challenge, and Whalley finished up the round robin, peaking at the right time as they solidified their defence.

In the semi final against North Regina, Whalley batting and aggressive base running was the difference, as only one error was committed in a defensive gem. Whalley prevailed 5-1 to gain the right to revenge their only loss of the tournament.

In Saturday's final game, Whalley combined great pitching from Jeff Degano with aggressive base running and putting the ball into play. It proved a great combination, as the aggressive tactics caused 5 errors by High Park, and two runs to score on one pass ball at the plate. Sparkling defence was highlighted by Tanner Morache at second base.

Late in the game, Tanner stunned the crown into momentary silence when he moved quickly to his right to backhand a hot grounder up the middle. With his momentum carrying him past second base, he flipped the ball directly from his glove backwards to the shortstop, and record the force-out at second base. As the crowd erupted into cheering and applause, even the High Park coach could be seen shaking his head and applauding the play.

The team left today for Williamsport, where they play their first game Friday.

Check out the World Series at www.littleleague.org to follow the team. You should also be able to send your best wishes to the team via email, and I would encourage all of District 3 fans and staff to send a short note of encouragement.
