Karl Gosselin Tourney at the Half Way Mark
The two top teams in round robin play in the Karl Gosselin Memorial Tournament are not scheduled to meet each other. That should make for some interesting times as Whalley and Mount Seymour are both 3-0 at the midway point of the tournament.

Major Play Off Picture Coming into Focus
With one game left in round robin play, the match ups for Saturday's semi finals are almost set.

Coquitlam's win over White Rock South Surrey Wednesday night clinched top spot for the gang north of the Fraser river. Both Langley and Coquitlam finished with 3-1 records, but Coquitlam is awarded first based upon head to head competition. Langley places second.

Should Whalley defeat North Langley in tomorrow night's game, they will claim 4th spot. Should North Langley win, a tie breaker game will be required between the same two teams Friday night.

Regardless of that, Langley will face White Rock South Surrey in the first semi final, and Coquitlam will play either Whalley or North Langley in the second game. The winners of those games will play the sudden death final on Sunday, July 18th.

Provincial JR and SR Tournament Meetings
The Senior tournament Manager's and Coaches meeting will be held on July 23rd at 7 pm at Whalley Athletic Park in Surrey.

The Junior tournament Manager's and Coaches meeting will be held in North Vancouver on the same date, in the Loon Room at the Karen Magnussen Centre 2300 KIRKSTONE RD NORTH VANCOUVER BC V7J 3M3

Major Semi Finals Too Close To Call
After a week of round robin play, the semi finals of the District Three Major tournament are now set. Any of the four remaining teams has a legitimate shot at the District crown.

Langley and Whalley have led the way offensively, scoring an average of 6 runs or better per game. Defensively, the story has been Coquitlam and Langley, averaging less than two runs conceded per game played.

While those statistics would seem to favour Langley, there are a lot of intangibles when 11 and 12 year olds play baseball.

Will White Rock South Surrey continue their pattern of playing average defence one game, and a total game the next?

Will Whalley overcome their inconsistent play, and can Langley continue to be both an offensive power and defensively sound?

Can Coquitlam continue to provide the runs to complement their solid defensive play?

Finally, in a sudden death game, anything can happen, and, in Little League, quite often does.

We can expect an interesting Saturday afternoon at Mackin Yard.

Historic Tournament a Resounding Success

One Plus One = WOW!!
The historic 2004 Canadian Junior and Senior Tournaments have ended, but the buzz created by the host Coquitlam Little League will be reverberating around Canada for years to come. One Senior tournament plus one Junior tournament at one site does indeed equal WOW!!

For the first time in Canadian Little League history, two levels of tournament play were hosted simultaneously by one District and one League. The tournaments also recorded another first, that being the live webcasting of all games at Blue Mountain Park.

The tournaments were the topic of conversation at the National Little League meetings held in Brossard Quebec during the Major Canadian Tournament. All divisions reported that they had received glowing reports from their teams with regard to the tournament organization, the facilities, and the hospitality of Coquitlam Little League, and the people and City of Coquitlam. All asked me to express their gratitude to the tournament organizers, the billeting families, and the executive of Coquitlam Little League.

The web cast was a sensational success as far as the Canadian Little League family is concerned. I was inundated with questions about the web casts, as all Little League representatives from the different regions reported a lot of positive comments from parents and Little League fans. Given the short amount of time that Coquitlam Little League had to get it up and running, the impact was astounding. During the final two nights, August 11 and 12, large groups of people were huddled around laptops in the hallways of the host hotel in Brossard, watching the semi finals and final games. It seems that one side of the hotel has wireless web hook ups, but the other side of the hotel has problems with interference. The solution was to set the lap top up on an ironing board in the hallway, and to try and keep the cheering down as the clock approached 3 am Eastern Daylight Time!! I didn't have the heart to tell them they should all be paying for separate hook ups!

The hosts of the 2005 Canadian Major Championship, in Timmins, Ontario, have already made preliminary plans to both air the games, and include live play by play.

All of District 3 is proud of the job Coquitlam did on these tournaments. Our thanks to President Steve Tickner, and his tournament committee, in particular Gerald Otterman and the newly promoted Assistant Tournament Director Alana Park. (To think she started out as "JUST" the billeting coordinator!).

All jokes aside, words cannot express what a fantastic job you all did.

Whalley Seniors Move to 2-1 in World Series
Whalley Senior All Stars improved their record to 2-1 with a win over Saipan Tuesday in Bangor. The B.C. squad is looking to a second place finish in their bracket with a win Wednesday. The team is idle Thursday as pool play wraps up.

Canada 4, CNMI 1

Canada used a three-run second inning to defeat the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands 4-1 in the 1 p.m. game in Day 3 of World Series action.
Canada didn't even hit the ball out of the infield in the inning, getting two infield hits and a sacrifice bunt.
Stang led off with an infield hit to the mound and Croasdale followed with a bunt single. Crowhurst then put a bunt down the first-base line. The CNMI catcher picked the ball up on the first-base side but his throw to get Stang at third was late. With the bases loaded, Donaldson walked to drive in Canada's first run. A squeeze bunt by Cameron scored Croasdale to make it 2-0, and then a fielder's choice by Watt scored Crowhurst to put the lead at 3-0.
CNMI scored a run in the fourth inning after Palacios doubled to lead off, advanced to third on a single by Allen, and scored on a single to right field by Suares.
Canada added a fourth run in the bottom of the sixth.
Stang went 2-for-3 and Beaudry went 2-for-4 to lead Canada. For CNMI, Palacios went 2-for-4 and Antoine Allen went 2-for-3.
Editor's note: Morning games will not feature line score updates because this Web site is produced by only one person, who is responsible for photographing the games, writing the stories, and maintaining the Web site.

Junior Division Instructional Fall Ball Set to Get Underway
Junior Fall League

Hi All, now that the baseball season is over Whalley is again trying to
organize a fall junior league for 12 and 13 year olds. We are planning to
start early September and go until mid to late October or as the weather
permits. The games will be on Saturday and Sundays only and we plan playing
at the Whalley Junior field unless there are other parks available. The cost
will be minimal, all we ask is the teams split the umpire costs and supply
game balls. Those interested please contact me ASAP and if you can pass this
on to coaches in your league that might be interested in participating. We
are trying to make it for 12 and 13 year olds as we want to make it a
development situation for the younger players coming to the Junior size
field. Thanks for your help and if you have any questions do not hesitate to
contact me.

Looking to Volunteer??
District Three is in need of a dedicated volunteer to act as secretary to the District Board. Meetings are generally held monthly, except for July, August and September. Meetings are held in Surrey, usually from 7 to 9:30 pm on a week night. Volunteer hours would amount to approximately 4 hours per month.

Duties would include taking minutes of the meeting, presenting incoming correspondence to the members, preparing and sending out meeting agendas and notices, filing reports as required by the Society's Act, Little League Canada and other areas.

If you have a few hours each month to attend a meeting, and are interested in the workings of Little League Baseball at the District level, why not give this try?
