District 33 Year in Review ![]() As we look forward to the 2009 season with great anticipation, I thought I would highlight some of the great moments of 2008. Reviewing the past year, we had many great moments for the players as well as for the volunteers. Some of these moments will be remembered for a lifetime, some of the moments reflect the dedication of volunteers that have spanned the better part of their adult life. There are always ups and downs in a season, for many this year will be remembered for the highs. Here are some of the highlights of 2008. January
Knights and Mesa Junior/Senior leagues were formed. After years of success with the Junior/Senior Patriot program, District 33 is excited about the creation of these new leagues in our District. 10 years ago Pony dominated the 13-16 year old program. Now Pony is all but eliminated within the boundaries of District 33. February
Reggie and Tye Waller held a coaches clinic for the Junior Division coaches. Brent Forrest held a coaching clinic for coaches moving up to Juniors emphasizing the changes in rules, strategies and the challenges at the Junior Division. March
We had the first ever CBI tournament at Western Region Al Houghton Stadium in San Bernardino. This tournament was conceptualized and organized by Tom Stoddard. Everyone that was involved be it parent, player, manager or umpire said this was one of the best things that has ever happened in the history of this District. Congratulations to La Mesa National Little League as the first winners of the CBI tournament. More important than who won was the experience had by all teams. Tom’s ideas are now the model for all teams wanting to use the Western Region facilities. April

We had our best certification since the change in regulations for proof of residency for All Stars. Tremendous jobs by each of the league’s player agents help us complete the process. Thanks to Ed Kirkpatrick, our district staff player agent, for all his certification training with the league players’ agents. July
Congratulations to the following leagues for winning the Section 6 and 7 All Star Tournaments:
Congratulations to the Seniors Division: Patriot National for winning the Sub-Division III All Star Tournament. A special "thank you" goes out to all the volunteers that supported all the teams and help in the tournament. August
Pete Jones: who umpired at the Softball Little League Western Region Tournament. Dan Esqueda: who umpired at the Baseball Senior World Series Tournament. November
Bob Bermingham from Lake Murray Little League converted our District map to Google maps. This is unique and a valuable asset to the entire District. December
What's in Store for 2009?
The Padre Coaching Clinic taught by Big Al of Al & Al fame will be at Petco this year with the Padres picking up the expenses for the clinic thanks to the work of Ned Kern from District 33 and Chollas Lake Little League and the Padres Community Relations Department. We have an Urban Player Development Clinic for 100 players from the Urban leagues in our District. This is Free for these players thanks to a donation from Reggie and Tye Waller. ASAP Baseball Academy is providing the coaches of District 33 a sponsored Coaches Clinic at no cost to the volunteers. We will hold free umpires and rules clinics again for 2009 We will again hold the CBI tournament at Western Region Headquarters. Look for the announcements of the umpires from District 33 chosen for tournaments. The District awards will be handed out at the District Dinner to the most deserving volunteers. Please give great consideration to nominating the volunteers that have the greatest impact on your league and the youth. Clay Berry District 33 Administrator |
