District 33 Year in Review
calendar

As we look forward to the 2009 season with great anticipation, I thought I would highlight some of the great moments of 2008. Reviewing the past year, we had many great moments for the players as well as for the volunteers. Some of these moments will be remembered for a lifetime, some of the moments reflect the dedication of volunteers that have spanned the better part of their adult life. There are always ups and downs in a season, for many this year will be remembered for the highs. Here are some of the highlights of 2008.

January
One of the largest coaching clinics ever held by Al & Al was hosted by District 33 with over 500 in attendance at Helix High School.

Knights and Mesa Junior/Senior leagues were formed. After years of success with the Junior/Senior Patriot program, District 33 is excited about the creation of these new leagues in our District. 10 years ago Pony dominated the 13-16 year old program. Now Pony is all but eliminated within the boundaries of District 33.

February
One of the focuses for District 33 has been coaches and players clinics. 2008 was another year in which we focused on providing life lessons through emphasizing Double Goal Coaching.

Reggie and Tye Waller held a coaches clinic for the Junior Division coaches.

Brent Forrest held a coaching clinic for coaches moving up to Juniors emphasizing the changes in rules, strategies and the challenges at the Junior Division.

March
For the 10th consecutive year all leagues in District 33 reached 100% ASAP submission. Thank you to Steve Taylor for his leadership at the District level, and thank you to all Safety Officers and Presidents for your leadership at the league level.

We had the first ever CBI tournament at Western Region Al Houghton Stadium in San Bernardino. This tournament was conceptualized and organized by Tom Stoddard. Everyone that was involved be it parent, player, manager or umpire said this was one of the best things that has ever happened in the history of this District. Congratulations to La Mesa National Little League as the first winners of the CBI tournament. More important than who won was the experience had by all teams. Tom’s ideas are now the model for all teams wanting to use the Western Region facilities.

April
Little League Padres day at Petco Park has grown in the way it involves the leagues and players. District 33 as well as the other districts in San Diego meet with the Padres every year to find ways to enhance the experience.

May
Our annual District Banquet was quite a success this year. We had the honor of having a longtime friend of our District, Reggie Waller as our keynote speaker. Reggie’s experience as an Assistant General Manager for the Padres, Scout for the Padres, Astros, and Mets, as well as a hitting instructor and coach gives him a unique perspective. Reggie thanked the volunteers and we would like to thank our award winning volunteers from 2008.

    Softball

We had our best certification since the change in regulations for proof of residency for All Stars. Tremendous jobs by each of the league’s player agents help us complete the process. Thanks to Ed Kirkpatrick, our district staff player agent, for all his certification training with the league players’ agents.

A special "thank you" goes out to all the volunteers that supported all the teams and help in the tournament.

August
We are proud to have two umpires from our District chosen to do Western Region and World Series Tournaments in 2008.

Pete Jones: who umpired at the Softball Little League Western Region Tournament.
Dan Esqueda: who umpired at the Baseball Senior World Series Tournament.

November
District Wide Board Meeting is something that orginated in District 33 and is now being duplicated by other Districts. This annual meeting with all the local board members and Distict Staff allows us to meet its newest volunteers, while giving these volunteers an idea of what the District does to support the leagues. Thank you to all that attended the annual Board of Directors meeting. This year we had several guests to help support the break out meetings. These guests included eteamz representatives as well as several professional coaches. Congratulations to San Carlos for having the top attendance.

Bob Bermingham from Lake Murray Little League converted our District map to Google maps. This is unique and a valuable asset to the entire District.

December
Allied Gardens became the latest Little Padre Parks in San Diego. Both their upper and lower field were renovated through the Padres Little Padre Park Program and the help of County Supervisor Diane Jacobs. This is the 4th Little Padre Park in District 33 and reflects the relationship that the District has built with the Padres.

What's in Store for 2009?
2009 will be another banner year for District 33. Here are some of the things you can look forward to:

The Padre Coaching Clinic taught by Big Al of Al & Al fame will be at Petco this year with the Padres picking up the expenses for the clinic thanks to the work of Ned Kern from District 33 and Chollas Lake Little League and the Padres Community Relations Department.

We have an Urban Player Development Clinic for 100 players from the Urban leagues in our District. This is Free for these players thanks to a donation from Reggie and Tye Waller.

ASAP Baseball Academy is providing the coaches of District 33 a sponsored Coaches Clinic at no cost to the volunteers.

We will hold free umpires and rules clinics again for 2009

We will again hold the CBI tournament at Western Region Headquarters.

Look for the announcements of the umpires from District 33 chosen for tournaments.

The District awards will be handed out at the District Dinner to the most deserving volunteers. Please give great consideration to nominating the volunteers that have the greatest impact on your league and the youth.
