Sunday, April 19 Training guide for the new umpire.
Baseball is a simple game, but has a hundred pages of rules! Training new (and old) umpires is not an easy task. You cannot give someone a rule book and expect them to be ready to officiate the next day. Even those who have played ball for many years, aren't really ready to umpire a game properly, but playing and coaching experience is definetly a plus. Over the years as an umpire, I have held many training sessions for new umpires, from 13 years olds to 50's. Trying to find the right training manuals for young and old seemed to be impossible. So, over the last 10 years, I put together a training guide from many different sources; IHSA clinics, Professional umpire books, Little League rule and case books, and my own experiences. My main goal was to make an easy reading guide that makes learning to be an umpire FUN, while preparing the new umpire for 'most' situations in a Little League game (60' Base). You may use, copy, make changes or update this guide book as you deem necessary. I wish you luck in teaching and preparing all our new umpires.
